Ugh.....Pawn shops..

Post by Kid Dracula »

So today I went into the local pawn shop down the street to try and turn in some doubles I had to make a quick buck. Last time I was there the manager told me that he was interested in what I had and that they accept older games for sure. So, I go in today and he wasn't there so I spoke with an employee about turning my items in. I had a front loading nes with a power pad, a GBC, 2 super nintendo games, and a genesis. As soon as I took them out the employee goes "we don't take them, they're too old", I said "too old?" you have a NES for sale for $89.99 with no cords!! Then I explained to him what the manager said and he still refused. So as I was putting my things away and I said "its weird that you don't accept retro games but you sell retro games" and he walks away and says "what is this smart ass week?!" I looked at him and told him that he was an idiot and that no matter what you should never speak to a potential customer that way, period. Thus, I will never do business with that pawn shit again. :x

So does anyone else have any other horror stories about pawn shops?

I've actually never been in a pawn shop. There aren't any close to where I live and this Alec Baldwin scene from Miami Blues convinced me that nothing good could ever happen in one anyway:

So I don't know anything about pawn shops, but my impression is that they do not pride themselves on great customer service. Hell, plain old independent video-game only trade-in places always offered shitty service in my experience.

I love the one closest to me. They are so clueless with games. I've gotten some of the latest ps3/wii games for $7. When a pawn shop sells god of war 3 for $7, it really makes you wonder where the hell the idiots are that are pawning these games off for $2 a piece.
The web's first video game public library! http://videogameexperiment.com rents all games for free and sells them for less than Ebay and Amazon! Plus we take anything in on trade-in.

Well, don't you suppose those types of games were stolen and then pawned?

Are there laws in your state where they track the info of the sellers? They're probably stolen games being unloaded.

Like videogameexperiment, I'm usually taking advantage of my local pawn shop, not the other way around. They sell most of their games for $2. Over time, I've managed to buy the following PS2 games for just two bucks a piece:

Ace Combat 4: Shattered Skies
Aeon Flux
Amplitude
Blood Rayne 2
Burnout 3: Takedown
Call of Duty 3
Call of Duty: World at War - Final Fronts
Cold Winter
Crazy Taxi
Dark Watch
Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus
Flatout 2
Freedom Fighters
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
The Godfather
Gun
Indigo Prophecy
Killzone
Mad Maestro!
Mark of Kri, The
Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne
Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence
Moto GP
Pinball Hall of Fame: The Gottlieb Collection
Ratchet and Clank
Shox
Star Wars Battlefront
Street Fighter Anniversary Collection
Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2004
Timesplitters 2
Ultimate Spider-Man
Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria
War of the Monsters

Pawn shops I find tend to generally be a lot more clueless about their games and whatnot compared to pretty much any dedicated gaming store. Next to garage/yard sales and goodwill, I don't think there's any better type of place to hit up if you're looking for gaming deals. I got at least half of my ps2 collection from snagging deals at pawn shops (Dragon Quest VIII and Xenosaga III together for $8 is probably the best deal I got out of the bunch), and have even found fairly valuable older games such as Final Fantasy IIIus and Gunstar Heroes for less than $5 at them more than once.

Every time I see games at pawn shops it's always beat up old crap and sports games that they think is worth gold. Granted I haven't gone to pawn shops often, but that's been my experience around here. Except exactly once. I stopped at a random pawn shop that was having a Christmas half off sale a few Yeard back while in a different part of town. Picked up Man Bites Dog Criterion Collection DVD absolutely mint for $4.
