Dunno if this is news to you guys, but it was to me, I've been wondering how the new DS will handle 3D until I saw this. Looks really immersive. Reminds me of the work Johnny Lee did with 3D on the Wii, more about the immersion than having things pop out at you.
Nintendo 3DS Demo
Re: Nintendo 3DS Demo
Holy crap, that looks a lot more interesting than I gave it credit for. Now I'm curious to see how well it can be used and I feel like I might have underestimated it.

this sums up my thoughts 100 percent perfectly.Dylan wrote:Holy crap, that looks a lot more interesting than I gave it credit for. Now I'm curious to see how well it can be used and I feel like I might have underestimated it.
Re: Nintendo 3DS Demo
Just a note, this is NOT footage of the 3DS. This is a DSi using the cameras similar to the aforementioned Wii demo.

Oh, that's fairly obvious, I'm assuming something similar to this is the technology the 3DS will be most likely using.MrPopo wrote:Just a note, this is NOT footage of the 3DS. This is a DSi using the cameras similar to the aforementioned Wii demo.

Re: Nintendo 3DS Demo
The 3DS is supposedly using completely different tech to this, which works in a similar way to thr holograms you used to get in cereal boxes showing a couple of frames of a movie or whatnot - you view the screen from a different angle and it displays something different (a different camera angle), meaning that you get a 3D effect. Its called Lenticular printing.

The game in that video is out in the US on DSiWare - its known as Looksleys Line Up. Its meant to be decent, but has real problems with camera lighting conditions sensitivity, which would presumably be a reason why this tech would be a bad choice for a 3D portable, where the lighting conditions are likely to change (for example, on a bus or train.)

Re: Nintendo 3DS Demo
Heres an example of lenticular printing.
some better, but more subtle examples at 2 minutes in here:
Heres a very simple home made 'lenticular' card someone made, which demonstrates how it works in a very obvious way.
EDIT: Assuming the 3DS has camera and/or Accelerometers then the original form of 3D mentioned in this topic is still entirely possible. I kinda like that method of 3D. I've been interested in these 3D methods for my final year university project.
Re: Nintendo 3DS Demo
Honestly, I think this is cooler than hologram-like 3D.
