Top 10 Racing Games for 8- and 16-bit Consoles

Post by timewarpgamer »

Happy Memorial Day to all. I just finished another Top 10 Feature, and thought y'all might be interested:

It seemed like not too many retro racers have held up very well over the years. Let me know if you have any suggestions for additions. Cheers!

No Virtua Racing!?!?!? It's hands down the best racer 16-bit or earlier.

I'm always excited to read your reviews man, they are so thorough and well presented. The topic of 8/16bit racers is something that isn't talked about very often and you nailed it on the head. Keep em coming dude, I love it.

Thank for putting Top Gear up there. A fantastic game. It was really big in Brazil, too. I remember playing it a lot back in the day.

Thanks for all the nice feedback, guys. These Top 10s of mine do morph (and hopefully improve) over time, so I really appreciate the suggestions. A couple debates that have already arisen:

Top Gear or Top Gear 2?

R.C. Pro-Am or R.C. Pro-Am II?

In general, I didn't feel like the sequels were much better than the originals. Top Gear 2 seemed to go for a more realistic racing feel (seemed a little sluggish in controls), and I didn't like the music as much. The graphics for R.C. Pro-Am II seemed significantly worse than in the first one.

While we're at it, what about...

Road Rash II vs. Road Rash III?

i also agree with the original RC Pro AM being better than the sequal, however i still think Top Gear 2 is much better than Top Gear. For me it has better music, improved graphics, and more options. i do agree with the control needing some tweaks but after i played TG2 i didn't go back playing TG again. And while were on the Top Gear topic, YES Top Gear 3000 sucks.
