I mean it's not like they're struggling to rake in profits or anything.
But you see if they aren't having problems making money, there is no reason to lower the price of the game to try and get people to buy it.
But even when they were on top (such as in the SNES days) they had budget lines.

Sony had greatest hits lines when the ps1 and ps2 were on top.

This is the first generation that Nintendo is first, and it's being run by Iwata so it might be a thing he has decided. As a consumer I don't like this situation, but as a businessman I can totally understand the reason behind it.

People will just not buy software at launch if they know the prices are going to fall to 1/2 1/3 1/4 or even 1/5 of the launch price

That actually made me think of something. The last time Nintendo didn't have a budget line was when they had something like 90% marketshare in North America with the NES. They re-released plenty of games but I don't remember any uniform discount system.

I'm not sure if that's a fair comparison, though. The video game market of the late 80's is in no way comparable to the game market today. Also, the Wii is dominant but nowhere near as dominant as the NES was.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Same goes for any other console out there.
At least here, in Spain Wii games appear at 40/45 euro, the same starter price as PC games while the other consoles appear at 65 euro (!) and drop pretty slowly in price.

PC games drop very fast, in two months you have it for 20 euro at most.

The answer is, as usual, supply and demand. That being said... hey! I hadn't realized it until now, but where IS the 'Player's Choice' program? Interesting! Perhaps it's returned in a sense in the form of the 'Touch Generations' (for example) titles.

I for one always hate players choice games, because they always look stupid compared to the original releases.

Nintendo games, specifcally starring Mario, I always get when new because the price doesn't go down often. If the game isn't starring mario and made by nintendo there is a good chance its price might go down before the console generation is over.

But an intresting point that they never had a budget line on systems that sold way more than the competition. NES, GB, GBA, DS and Wii don't have player's choice games, at least none I have seen. But the real question is how many times have you bought a Nintendo game and didn't think it was worth the price.

I don't think the SNES had the Players' Choice line until, like 1996. It shouldn't be too surprising if the line doesn't make an appearance for the Wii until the next home console is imminent.

Also, according to Wikipedia, the Player's Choice line didn't show up for GBA until 2006. For reference, the Nintendo DS was released in late 2004.
