Scariest Game Scenes Outside of Horror Games

Post by lisalover1 »

It's obvious that the horror genre is centric around fear, but some games, while certainly not horror games, can be pretty scary, too. What are some of the scariest game scenes you remember from games not in the horror genre?

I just saw something pretty scary in the intro to the third case in Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth. Yeah, it was a really smart idea for me to play this game late at night. Anyway, here's the scene; wait until the very end of the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-NVJjIYSGf4
It's all the more frightening if you've played the extra 5th case of the first game. [Anybody who has played it through will know what I'm talking about].

Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask both were pretty terrifying at times. The bottom of the well, the Forest, Fire, and Shadow temples, Ikana Canyon (and a whole ton of other stuff in MM that slightly disturbed me on a psychological level), I could go on.

I always though the first boss in Ocarina of Time was pretty intimidating. It was an impressive boss for its time and it really managed to scare the crap out of me when I first encountered it. That creepy glowing eye on the ceiling gets me every time.

Well, believe it or not, during bomberman 10 player party I once held
Out of nowhere came a big monster which just relaxingly walked into the screen and later left again. Not really that scary, but we were like: WTF! Did they put that in the code? awesome! We were with alot of people, but with onlz two youngsters or 1 kid playing in a dark room. It might be scarier!
I can't remember which level it was, but I'm sure it was not the 10 player level. Must've been the normal vs levels. What the hell even triggered this? Deserves a thread of it's own.

i agree that zelda OoT and MM were actually really scary. as a kid i couldn't continue because i was actually kind of afraid at some points...but anyways; Although im not really big into the game, in persona 3 i remember staying in one level of the tower basically farming (if you will) monsters. now for those of you who do not know, the monsters appear on in the area's as blobs until you actually fight them. all of a sudden a fucking big ass grim reaper appears and starts chasing me. all you here from me is "WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT!!!" and then i get my ass handed to me. lol

As a young child I found Medievil oddly intimidating.

Also for some odd reason I was always nervous when I brought a new game home and had to sit through the intro movies.

Super Metroid can get harrowing at times when you're a child. One time I played it late into the night and started hallucinating that a Metroid was guarding the bathroom, and I didn't have an ice beam to get past him.

The agonising screams in the first area of Unreal, along with what I've come to call the L-shaped corridor trap, where the lights start going out one by one, those were the first scary moments for me in gaming, and Unreal wasn't scary but the clever use of lighting and sound was incredible at the time.
