How do you know if it is hardware or software BC?
20 and 60gb were all hardware b/c.
the first 80gb models were software.
all the rest (including the 40gb, which came out after the 80gb) have no ps2 compatibility at all.
Just mentioned this on another post.

Buy the cheap dedicated DVD - Blueray player for watching your movies, especially the not so pristine rentals.
With the YLOD hanging, I wouldn't waste that mileage on PS2-PS1 games either. Get a PS2 for non PS3 titles.

look, I understand your extremely negative experience with the reliability of ps3 models, but your experiences are rather in the minority when it comes to users as a whole.

Just common sense on any console. PS3 is great game machine, why not try to protect the investment any way you can?
No, I agree, I'm the same way. Back when I got my PS2 I didn't have a stand alone DVD player. I actually picked up my first DVD player because I didn't want to put the extra wear on my PS2. If I actually owned more than one BD (Terminator 2!!!) I'd get a BD player for the same reason.
