Odyssey 2 controller mod....

Post by wclem »

Anyone out there ever try to modify one these to work with Atari stick or something similar. I got one that has a broken retainer and is probably beyond repair because of this. I may try some welding down the road but for now I was thinking of wiring up a replacement.

Or better yet, does anyone have a spare controller?

Both are digital sticks, a meticulous trace of wires for movement and single fire button.

Best to wire up a couple 9 pin 2600 ports. Then you can use any 2600 compatible joystick.

Don't cut that Odyssey wire, check it with a volt meter to verify the traces.
Set up a matrix for your 2600 mod. You can have both bridged to work.

2600 Port, use Directions, Fire and Ground.

Got a pin layout for the Odyssey by any chance?

They have an internal connector, dont know which is which, though it may be possible to figure out on my own. Bear with me, I am learning as I go with this.

Sweet, thanks guys, I couldnt find it for whatever reason. Gonna try it out this weekend. Got an odyssey 2 with a ton of games cheap. Just has one busted controller.

Maybe, just maybe, this might work with a Genny controller also?

I don't think you'll be able to get the Genesis to work. There's a typo in the diagram; it repeats Up Down instead of having them be Left Right (not sure which maps to which). And overall the way it works is that the Genesis understands the status of the Select pin to determine what buttons are being pressed. The Odyssey2/Atari don't understand that interface.

Just to note, there are 2 different models of the Odyssey 2. The one with red fire buttons, the controllers are hard wired. The one with silver fire buttons, they have a 9 pin D-sub plug that's the same shape at a 2600 controller, but the pins are different as noted previously.

I heard mixed info that Genesis controller would work or not.
Anyways here is the port pinout. (The Game pad plug end)

You could get it to work, but it wouldn't be as simple as rewiring a port. You'd have to include a chip to handle the way the select pin works on the Genny controller.
