PS1 Backups on PS2

Post by SpaceBooger »

I have a PS2 70012 model with the magic switch installed. I use swap magic for dvds but now I want to play some ps1 games.
I have been slowly building up my PS1 and PS2 collection, but there are some games I want to play, specifically Castlevania SOTN, and have not found one cheap enough to snag yet.

So what is the best way for me to play a PS1 backup without doing the PS1 swap trick?

Thanks!

You need to hardmod it. Softmods won't allow you to boot PS1 backups. There is an elf out there that is supposed to allow booting of PS1 backups, but essentially it automates the swap method (you need an original in, then you swap, swap and swap again) but it's only compatible with certain PS2 models. I tried it and it didn't work on any of my PS2s (2 slims and a fat, all different versions).

Thats what I was afraid of...
I'm surprised nobody has found a way around this yet.
I dont mind swapping, I just dont want to swap while the disc is moving.

I keep seeing videos about going to the browser and swapping out. For some reason I cant go to the browser and insert a game and see the disc icon. Is this because of the softmod to keep the system's door open?

Wow, I was gonna say that Free McBoot would probably work, but I was unaware that it will only boot PS1 games via a swap. I was just assuming they worked out a way to boot PS1 burns.

But yeah, I mod chip will allow you to boot a PS1 CD-R directly. Nothing better than that in my own opinion. I know every one looks at the PS2 mod chip as the mod chip from hell, but if you're good with soldering and following directions it shouldn't be too bad.

I have a Breaker Pro disk that I've used on my slim ps2 with some success. Oddly the controls only work right when i use a dualshock 1 controller, with a ds2 the buttons are mapped wrong. I think it's supposed to work better on depending on the particular model you have, I've never bothered to look into it much though.

70012 huh... that's a slim right?

When I had my slim, I tape and tissue modded it (look it up, it's easy) and just did the old ps1 swap trick where you just switch the discs out when the Playstation logo appears. I actually found it was a bit easier to do on the slim than it was on the old ps1 I had.

Worked fine for me.

Fmcboot wont even boot ps2 games if they are on a CD.

A few months back I looked into this because I wanted to play backups (mainly policenauts) with component out, swap method was the only way I found but it was not compatible with my console either.
I also read that swap magic 3 (which is what I use to play legit imports on the ps2) supports it, but not the .elf version that I use (so i can use it from the fmcboot menu).

From all my searching, there is no software based method to play PS1 backups on a ps2.

I am able to swap it, but I don't like messing with the motor while its spinning the disc.

there aren't really any other options unfortunately.

I suppose you could pick up a ps1 or something somewhere and just mod that for playing ps1 games if you wanted.

SnowKitty sells chipped PS1 for a good price. I've actually bought one off him. And if he doesn't have PS1's on hand, he will chip a console for you if you send it in. That is, if he still doing this.

So I assuming that you cannot chip a PS2 yourself then?
