Mac and Linux don't have many viruses because most people use Windows. Linux just isn't designed for the average user, while Mac is far outside most people's budget for a computer.

Also, if you don't run a anti virus program regularly, Malwarebytes.org has a pretty good malicious content scanner. I use Norton Antivirus, and Malwarebytes tends to pick up what Norton left behind.

Thanks for the advice, but I have eliminated any unnecessary program, and set most things to not turn on when the computer boots up. And, every Saturday night, my computer runs all all the maintenance things (like defraging), so I'm sure its not that.

I use some Vorizon Macafee thing for my anti-virus (whenever you use it).

McAfee is a disaster! Maybe it's to blame for screwing up the svchost process on your laptop (normally this is the one that consumes most CPU time when there's something wrong)

Just use AVG as previously mentioned, or Avast.. (I tend to shuffle between 2-3 AV programs each year)

As far as virus protection I just use Microsoft security essentials, works suprisingly well, is free, and has kept my computer free of Trojans, viruses, etc.

Here's a funny anecdote. I do computer repair and maintenance at several county government offices. The county requires that all their computers have Norton AV. [Don't get me started on how awful Norton is.] Several offices use Macs, and sure enough the county requires that they run Norton AV too. I tried telling the county that they were wasting money, but it doesn't matter. It turns out that government offices are much better at wasting taxpayers' money than making informed decisions.

And yes, Norton does make an Antivirus for OSX. link. As far as I can tell, all it does is waste system resources.

Worse then Spyware, my older response to Norton.

Norton is especially bad. My neighbor after a month of using it finally uninstalled it. Worse then a virus, anytime he did anything Norton would pop up with a warning "Click to continue".

Its Back again! Norton Security "Is it Safe? Press okay to continue ..........."

I use Spybot, but I would never use it exclusively. I like it a lot, and I think it has a great scanner, but I was reading a few reviews that claim the real time watcher (Tea Timer?) isn't too good. I really like the immunize feature though, I don't know how well it actually works but it's a great idea. In fact, why don't other anti-virue/malware programs have an immunize feature?

What's more, no ONE anti-virus or malware program means 100% total complete protection. Spybot will catch things that AVG wont, AVG will catch things that Spybot wont, Norton will catch things that AVG and Spybot wont, etc, etc.

I'm not saying that people should run multiple anti-virus programs, especially since running multiple anit-virus programs that have live detection seem to have negetive effects, but people should have an anti-virus AND anti-malware scanner (because they're not the same thing).

As I said earlier in this thread, I run AVG Free (anti-virus) and have been considering buying Malwarebytes (anti-malware). I also have Spybot installed and use the immunize feature. I'll scan with Spybot every so often as extra precaution. I guess I also have Windows Defender running too. Seems like a lot, I guess.
