Moving to Austin, TX

Post by onemanfilmcrew »

Well my girlfriend just told me she accepted a position at the University of Texas, so we are going to be moving to Austin, TX sometime in August. I've been there a few times and love the city, but I was wondering if anybody on here lives there currently? Outside of a great music scene and breakfast burritos I don't really know a whole lot about the city. Anybody know what the job market is like down there (seeing as how my GF has a job but I won't)?

I know the city is bike friendly. Wipeoutguy is your man if he wants to chime in.

Austin is my favorite city that I have ever lived in. It is super nice there, I have no idea what the job market is like though.

Go to 6th Street on a Friday or Saturday night... great nightlife as they close the entire street down :D

Lived in austin for 2 years. Never went to 6th street. It gets hot and there's a lot of hills.

Austin is a very nice town and has all of the amenities of a larger city without being a larger city. The job market is still surprisingly good and you shouldn't have any problem finding a job in the middle class sector.

We have Arcade UFO and Game Over Video Games. Those two should be enough to keep any gamer very happy for a long time. UT keeps the town more progressive and hip than the surrounding areas. 2 years ago Californians were overrunning the city (no offense to Californians) but the burst of the housing bubble put an end to that. Crime is low and it is relatively safe to walk the streets at night.

We have our annoyances. Austin is a great town, but it is surrounded by Texas. Some see this as a blessing, I'm not one of them. It gets hot in the summer. Stupid hot. We do not get the humidity places like Houston do, but it still gets maddeningly hot. And I am Texas born and raised.

It's late so I will leave it at that. Ask away, I will be happy to help you out.

I live in San Marcos (15 min south of Austin) and spend a decent amount of time there with a buddy (who is a chemist at UT, coincidentally).

It's a great town except for three things: It's expensive, traffic sucks, and the hipster scene is all but unbearable.

However, it does have its own chain of retro game stores called 'game over games' and these are the most impressive, professional, and reliable retro stores I've ever seen. It makes up for the trendy ass posers and a lot of the traffic any day of the week.

Anything else you'd like to know?

Edit: Just realized wip3outguy7 posted almost the exact same message as me. I'm late to the party but hopefully appreciated none the less.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?
