Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Suggestions for New Genre 101 Series

Post by racketboy »

So we've adapted the Retro Gaming 101 series to genres -- starting with Survival Horror:
http://www.racketboy.com/retro/survival ... guide.html

I know with the console-specific posts we were a lot more barebones at the beginning until we figured out what other info would be relevant and interesting. I'm hoping we can speed up that process this time around with feedback from everyone.

What extra sections of information would be especially-useful to have included in future installments? What could be improved in the existing sections?

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Point and Click Adventure is what it first came to my mind. Light-Gun Shooters, I just think that will be interesting.

Oh yeah, how about Free-Roaming games.

Crap, someone else beat me to point and click.

Light gun games is an excellent suggestion as well. I love my Sega Saturn for House of the Dead and Virtua Cop II.

Perhaps On Rails Shooters is a good idea? Like Star Fox and Panzer Dragoon.

One on light gun games would be cool (you know house of the dead, virtua cop, time crisis, etc).

Even though they have been making a slight come back due to the unique controllers for the wii, it is largely a dead genre on home consoles that only survives in the arcades (which are dying themselves).

*edit: I didn't realize other people mention light gun games before me, so therefor I just concur with them.

I like the point-and-click idea.

What about separate articles on RPGs and jRPGs? Or even an article on both that talks about the genesis and subsequent separation of the two?

I'd like to see some retro port comparisons.

I.E. Which is the superior version of Earthworm Jim, Mortal Kombat, etc.

I guess I was thinking more of what type of informational sections within each genre piece to cover instead of what genres to cover :)

What about a Developer 101? History of studios and companies?
