Green backs and experience points
Green backs and experience points
So I have been playing RDR and it has got me thinking about how money effectively functions like xp in the game. Now I am not going to try to say that RDR is an RPG because it clearly is not, I am just saying that it has a leveling system. Every time you kill someone or complete a quest you receive money, every time you receive money you are closer to getting new gear which makes you more powerful. I could just be stating the obvious here
. So what do you think? In some games does money function in the same way as xp?
Re: Green backs and experience points
Demon's Souls does, in a way. The Souls you collect off enemies are the currency of the game, and can be spent on items, weapon upgrades, or purchasing stats. In fact, the only way your stats (and level, which is equal to sum(stats)) increase is through purchasing them. Similarly, The Dark Spire has you collect experience, but it does not directly increase your level. Instead, you use that experience to purchase skills, stats, and class levels (with your character level being a function of your class level or levels).

Is Mega Man an rpg because every new robot boss you kill gives you a new power up?

Of course not and what has that got to do with the question at hand?
Re: Green backs and experience points
Oh, another one I remembered. The Human race in Final Fantasy Legend only gains stats through using specific items on them, so you have to buy their stats. Similarly the Robots in Final Fantasy Legend 3 gain their stats by buying parts.
We already have a thread for that.J T wrote:Is Mega Man an rpg because every new robot boss you kill gives you a new power up?

Re: Green backs and experience points
In these games do you have a choice of which stat to buy or do you just buy whatever is next? If it is the former that sounds pretty interesting. I have not played a lot of jRPGs but I do like the older ones that I have played(DW1).MrPopo wrote:Oh, another one I remembered. Re: Green backs and experience points
You choose what stats to buy. FFL1 only has a few relevant stats for humans, HP, Str, and Agi. There's also a magic stat, but that's only for Mutants (and Mutants are "gain random stats after combat"). Thing is, it's pretty easy to farm up the cash to be able to fully buff Str and Agi in that game (and it's almost required if you're not going to cheese the last boss). The other wrinkle is that though the game only displays Str/Agi up to 99 it actually stores up to 255. So you can buff your Str to very high levels. You do have to be careful, though, as end game equipment also adds to your Str and can cause it to roll around to very low values.

I know, I know. I'll find my Deputy Double Thread Badge one day and once again Clean the Streets.

I have got to say that that is pretty funny that it can roll around.MrPopo wrote:You choose what stats to buy. FFL1 only has a few relevant stats for humans, HP, Str, and Agi.
