This has been known for a little bit now. If you ask me, I think this really sucks. I think it was stupid for the company to come out with the first game console with a Hard Drive to come out with a next-gen console that doesn't have a Hard Drive. Well, at least the memory card is big.

MS is going for price point only. Aunt Jody in Walmat on Black Friday getting an Xbox for her nephews is only gonna care about <$300. Cousin Steve can get the extra controller and HDD.

No one is putting a gun to anyones head and saying "Buy it"

But I do have a little fellow on my shoulder telling me to order a 8800gtx from newegg so I can play Crysis, CoD4 and UT3. He does not have a gun.

The MS execs always talk about $199 being the start of the mass market prices. This is their ticket to $199. I think they're going to slash this SKU from $279 to $199 (possibly with a wired controller or without the arcade games) in the spring ... just a few weeks before GTA 4 hits store shelves.

Then those who haven't yet gone next-gen and want to play GTA will have a choice between a $399 PS3 and $199 X360. The choice is going to be pretty weighted towards the 360 from a consumer standpoint.

I really love following the biz of gaming. It's almost like sports or politics. I don't care who "wins" because I just dig great games but it's just a lot of fun to watch.

That will be interesting -- that will probably be about the same time the Wii will drop to $199.
That will make the PS3 look ridiculous unless Sony gets their act together....

I know why they're doing it, to me it's like seeing Zalman, the founders of silent cooling, coming out with a small, noisy fan.

And I have a little Lombax on my shoulder telling me to set aside enough cash for R&C 5. He happens to be armed with a Combuster.
I also have a guy on my other shoulder telling me to get an 8800GTS 640MB before Hellgate:London comes out. October 30 is going to be an awkward day for me.

I don't know. If Wii is still selling this well beyond Xmas I doubt if they'll drop the price. That'll increase demand and they can't meet the demand as it is. But if I believe what I'm saying, then I might have to rethink that $199 price point for the 360. They might just drop it a *little* below the Wii, say $229 - an even $50 drop, and then then can say they're cheaper than the Wii with HD and x number of games and blah blah blah.

But you're right - both those machines are going to make the ps3 look pretty ridiculous, especially a lesser library of games. A lot of hard-core people will say it's still a good value with Blu-Ray, free online and a big HDD. Really, I agree with that. But the average buyer -- Aunt Jodi in Walmart -- ain't gonna know anything about that stuff, nor will they care.

Yeah, I don't know for sure when the Wii will drop, but they can't stay at $250 forever.
But I know they won't drop it until there are at least a few sitting on every major console store shelf in America.

First time I ever saw one on a shelf was the day I got my 360 about a month ago! Took about 10 months to see one in the wild.

I'd be surprised if it was still there now.
Supposedly, my local Toys R Us had some in stock for a week or so.
