Whats your favorite graphics era?

Post by RCBH928 »

Hello,

I have been playing games from different generations and noticing differences. I was wondering what is your favorite graphics era? Do you even have one?

This doesn't mean the graphics that had the most impact, or highest jump from older generation. Its your own personal favorite, and you have to be still enjoying it.

So what is it?
Tiny plain blocks of atari? NES simple graphics? 2D powered Snes/Genesis? First 3D games? N64 smooth graphics or psx detailed ones? Saturn's 2D? Current HD graphics? point and click adventures-paintings/Broken Sword ? 2000 Dreamcast-ish graphics?
I am not sure if I can count early FMV games as graphics on their own, because those blocky tiny videos are not seen any more.

Personally my favorite graphics is the N64. I just love the large 3D objects and how smooth they look. I also like older FMV games with pixelated videos, I guess its nostalgia .

What is it and why is it your favorite graphics era?

Great question!
For me it would have to be the SNES/Genesis era graphics. Bold and colorful and detailed enough to be beautiful. Why are so most games these days brown/grey?

I agree. 16-bit nailed down the 2D look just fine. I don't view today's 2D with the same delight, but that's my bias talking.

With 3D it's like this: Every generation/GPU/spec iteration it outmodes the previous one entirely.

I loved PC gaming during the VGA / SVGA era, Adventure games kicked ass during this time.

I am particularly fond of the 16 bit era graphics, but have to agree that SVGA and what it did for adventure games was also quite awesome

The blocky, early, pop-up 3D of N64.

I loved the way it looked, and its overall premature feel.

I'm nostalgic for the N64-level 3D, especially how the faces often looked stickered on to the sprites. Late 16-bit is always nice, and for some reason I like the 128-bit graphics better than current HD.

Put me in the DOS camp. This month's Together Retro is a great example. Check out the intro to X-Com and tell me that's not awesome. You can check it out here but it's more impressive in DOSBOX.

Animated sprites, hand painted backgrounds, 16-256 colors, maxing out at 320x240. Limited, but not so limited that there's no room for artistic expression.

16 bit, or Dreamcast era.

Anything colorful.
