Trailer for my post apocalyptic western short film.
Re: Trailer for my post apocalyptic western short film.
very cool, the quick 1 sec blip of the guy getting head was hilarious by the way.
Re: Trailer for my post apocalyptic western short film.
Well that was the only speaking line in the trailer so I guess that was my only reference.
The footage is really good for the DVX. You obviously did a whole crapload of color correction of at least some film looks. Shot in 24p I'm assuming. A guy I do some work for has DVXs (filming something with one tonight actually) but he's selling them to upgrade everything to HMC150s. He has one and damn. . . once you go tapeless (and HD) you'll never go back. I was also really impressed that the 720p footage is so well compressed that it's substantially smaller than SD DV footage from the DVX. Although AVCHD is a pain in the ass if you're using a mac, as I understand anyway.

Thanks man! I have tried magic bullet film looks, but they actually degrade your footage a bit especially when blown up on something large you can tell. I just do my own custom color correction with a 3 way color wheel. Ever since I started playing with the different settings in the DVX and of course white balancing all the time, manual iris adjustments etc my footage quality has increased by quite a bit that I don't really do too much color correction except for some obvious things that need it for a certain style. The DVX is still a very capable camera that does impress if in the hands with someone with experience, but I really want an HMC150, but i can't afford one anytime soon. they don't weigh too much more than the dvx do they? I don't want to buy a new steadycam and stuff when i upgrade.
Re: Trailer for my post apocalyptic western short film.
I believe they weigh less actually because they don't have the whole tape mechanism. I would say if you want one getting one sooner rather than later would be better since SD and tape cameras are losing value fast. I'm looking at getting an HMC40 for myself though. It's only a 1/4 chip camera but I think it makes up for that with HD footage. Probably not the best if you do a lot of low light stuff but for $2000 it's a really good deal.
Re: Trailer for my post apocalyptic western short film.
Just keep in mind that HD just means a bigger picture, not always better. I shot this video and everyone thinks it's HD. It's mainly Macro shots. good luck with the cam though. I'm sure I will be going true Hd soon lol
Re: Trailer for my post apocalyptic western short film.
The DVX does amazing closeups, I'll give it that. But I just shot a dance show last night and was stuck with the camera all the way in the back, HD would have gotten me more detail that I just couldn't get from that distance with SD. I'm shooting the second performance tonight so I'm going to zoom in a bit to see if I can gain any more detail. The DVX is great if you have time to plan out your shots (like for a short) but an HD camera helps a lot in settings where you don't know what to expect (such as a dance routine done completely in the dark with girls holding lamps, ARGH, that's not coming out)
Re: Trailer for my post apocalyptic western short film.
Man I feel you on that one. I was shooting a band play in a dimly lit venue that was only using minimal red lighting...yes, it was all garbage. Good luck on the shoot!
