Gran Turismo 1: First Impression

Post by MHSGamer33 »

OK, so last weekend I picked up Gran Turismo 1 Greatest Hits label for $5, and so far I am not impressed with the game. I have never been a fan of driving games in general, so I was hoping for this game to get me into the genre. So far I got my B rank diving licence and have driven one race. But, I am not having fun. Basicly, I'm asking: Did I pick a too complicated racing game for a beginer, or does the game get better later on?

The problem might be that you are picking up a game that is 10+ years old, it might feel stale and dated compared to the graphical and realism it once had, perhaps try a newer one.

I dont like racing games in general, but the only one I have ever enjoyed was Need For Speed Most Wanted, the series went to the shitter after it, but I enjoyed it, it is much more arcade-ish though.

Do you not like the driving genre? I mean if your not into a style of game, not much can change that, I really dislike RTS's, no matter how many times I get told 'try this, its amazing' I cant get into it because the game mechanics dont appeal to me.

Could this be the case?

If you don't like driving games in general what makes you think that a dated driving simulator will be fun for you? Try something more arcade like first.

I have adored the Gran turismo series since the first came out all those years ago, however I do not recommend starting out with the first now for the reasons emwearz stated. Probably the best game I could omagine to start with would be something like gt4 or gt5 prologue but not really anything older. If you want to step away from gt altogether I do strongly recommend Dirt 2 , it has me hooked at the moment.

The only way to deactivate the ray beam and fight back the vampire alien threat is with a complicated series of foot patterns on the device's control board that looks remarkably like a DDR pad. We will all praise this man for saving our lives and buy him a mountain of stuffed animals.

I love this game, I say slog out your licences, they teach you how to drive and it rewards you alot for getting good, it gets hugely fun when you get the hang of it.

You don't like driving games. So you chose one of the most in depth racing simulations of it's time, and you don't like it? I'm not surprised. You have to be into cars and how cars work to be even remotely interested in Gran Turismo. It's a car nuts game. If you don't like cars or driving then that's like saying "I bought Street Fighter II but I'm not having much fun, I'm not a fan of fighting games".

Agree. Gran Turismo is based on realistic driving which may be mundane to some after bouts of Fighting, FPS and 3d action games. Which systems do you own? Couple good drivers with Arcade feel are Dreamcast Daytona USA and Crazy Taxi. Crazi taxi also on other consoles.

The GT series has always blown nuggets, right from the very beginning. Your feelings about the game are NOT deceiving you! I'd play Ridge Racer 4 (R4?) if you want a PS1 racing game.

If you're going to try a Gran Turismo game, you should at least go with 3 or 4 to get the full experience of what that series has to offer. If you're not a gear head though, the others are right-- it's probably not the game for you.

Some of the other options people have given you are good. I will throw in Midnight Club II or III as other options. Those games are more about being a bad ass street racer and they take place in more open world environments.

Outrun 2006: Coast to Coast is another great arcade racer. It's got different challenges and it always feels fun, largely thanks to brilliant level design that always gives you something fun to look at while you are driving.

Burnout: TakeDown or Burnout: Revenge are good racers if you like to smash cars. These games are all about driving dangerously. I think it's the first time where a game ever made you go faster for hitting other cars rather than slower. Crazy physics like that encourage you to drive like a maniac.
