This is another thing i don't really like. Not a crit on the game really, but design. All the tutorials of how to play happen within the game and don't pause it. So you'll get a paragraph of text and then the game is still going. You might even be mid mission. So you are focused on what is going on around you and miss mechanics of the game. I am positive I'm missing how to do things properly.
That makes sense. It probably did tell you that in the tutorial, I was probably just not paying attention to it. I thought you had to beat the crap out of them with your fist, then tackle them to the ground. I could have made alot more money than I have so far if I would have figured it out earlier. Have you tried much of the multiplayer? What are your thoughts?

Thanks for the review, nick.

I'll admit, seeing the trailer for this gave me goosebumps, mainly due to my love of gritty Westerns. I'm not a terribly huge GTA fan, so this may or may not influence my decision to buy. I've had this freaking game in my Amazon cart on three occasions...can't seem to pull the trigger :|

I haven't jumped into the multiplayer yet. I booted up to 6 of my friends playing, but they were all playing single otherwise i might have given it a shot. Plus, I've only played gta in passing so i could use a bit of time to get familiar with the controls and how it plays.

I probably won't be playing it much until late this weekend. Not because i don't want to. Despite my criticisms there is still enough there to warrent playing and i do want to see if it gets better. I haven't hit my wall yet. I just have a ton of work! ugh!

I was in the same boat as you. I really like westerns and the trailers make this out to be a really fantastic game. And... you know- i do think there is a fantastic game in here. You just have to wade through a lot of useless side missions and crap that pads the missions to get to it. Just get past that GTA bullshit, which is really difficult. IMHO, If rockstar playtested, edited, and re-wrote a little more. Cut the game in half. It would be fantastic.

Sometimes i feel like they make their game dense with crap that doesn't matter or even make sense at points just to justify it. Because it is what people are expecting. As a player i'm often thinking "why is this happening? what is going on?"

I was chatting with a buddy of mine over e-mail. I typed this out... i feel like rockstar doesn't put much thought into these things. They just kinda write a mission and not really question it. The VERY beginning of the game has you talk to whoever it is you are trying to kill and he shoots you. With one bullet. And you are on death's door and out for like 3 days or whatever. Cool. Sounds fine when you write it on paper and see it in a script, but I'm a fucking bullet absorbing machine when I'm playing. The whole situation would've been so much better for the logistics and the actual story and motivations if like- the dude beat the fucking tar out of me. Just really almost killed me. It would establish he is awful and make me hate him, and it would fit and work within the world. As it is now- he is just like... some guy out there i haven't shot yet.

I agree on the quality over quantity, or as Rockstar tends to see it lots of quality and quantity.

I'm also not inclined to spend 100+ hours on a game anymore (Sid Meier library excluded). I always feel gypped for spending 50 bucks on a game only to explore 20 of its 200 potential hours - do I really want to play all 200 hours?

This isn't going anywhere

Well....don't brand this as a pure GTA clone. It really feels more like a Fallout 3/GTA4 hybrid.

I'm absolutely blown away by this game, it's got quality character development and excellent presentation. The gameplay is a blast as well. I agree that the opening is dumbfounding...that was poorly thought out and could have been fixed with 2 lines of dialogue. Beyond that, this game is a masterpiece. I'm calling RDR for GOTY.

Most of the world agrees with you. I am for sure in the minority. In the local gamestop today everyone was talking Red dead. They said i was the only one that they talked to who had anything bad to say about it.

Picked up the beautiful alan wake limited edition. BTW.
