I was with you until that statement. Why is it overrated? It's certainly better than Final Fight, and has better collision detection than most of Konami's beat 'em ups. The music is also pretty much unrivaled. And was there another beat'em up that featured a bad ending?

Only two things that I never liked about SoR
-Weak, submissive AI
-No separate punch/kick buttons

The problem is, most people who think Streets of Rage is so great haven't played a lot of beat'em ups. There's more out there than just Konami beat'em ups and Final Fight. And truthfully, it's not THAT much better than Final Fight. Final Fight 3 is almost on par with SOR 2 and 3.

The SOR series does have pretty badass music though, except SOR 3.

Anyway, tons of better beat'em ups out there. Sengoku III on the Neo Geo wipes the floor with SOR. It has such a fantastic combo system. And Capcom has a ton of beat'em ups that are far better than both SOR and their own Final Fight series. Even Guardian Heros on the Saturn is more impressive than SOR or Final Fight, though it's hard to say if Guardian Heroes is beat'em up or hack n slasher, but there honestly isn't much difference between beat'em up and hack n slasher. I personally like Ninja Warriors Again better than both SOR and Final Fight. Batman Returns on the SNES actually has more varied gameplay than both SOR and Final Fight. I could go on and on, there are so many beat'em ups out there and Final Fight/SOR really is like the core, basic elements you'd expect from a beat'em up. Games like Armored Warrior, Battle Circuit, D&D Shadow over Mystaria and Aliens vs Predator have taken that and down so much more with them

I think Konami's beat'em ups are a lot more fun than SOR actually. And I like the more fast paced gameplay some of them have versus the sluggish SOR and Final Fight games

Incidentally, SoRR v5 has an SoR Maker in it. I can't wait to make my own levels.

Another modern beat em up I liked, which was 2D was Sengoku 3. That game was pretty sick.
SoR maker? What is the extent of the customizability on that? Can you replace sprites/graphics/music/etc?

I think a game could easily done in 3D (SOR style 3D, that is), but with really great looking 3D graphics. Make the game short, but have a "level select" of multiple, possibly slightly different, games ranging in difficulty. So, let's say you get 5-10 full (in genesis standards) beatemups on one disc.

I'm not a mod, but I actually thought it was funny how this thread is about "Let's talk about the genre" (it's even in the first post!), but it's not in the place dedicated to that. Doesn't matter to me, but I loled.

Gamerforlife wrote:I have to disagree with a lot of you. God Hand was crap and is absolutely NOT how to do a 3d beat'em up right. Horrible tank controls with the absolutely retarded right analog stick dodge system, cheap, random bullshit and a completely retarded game difficulty generator that kept changing the game's difficulty based off of a performance evaluation system that wasn't even remotely accurate. There was an interview not long ago where Mikami himself said that God Hand wasn't good and that he'll never make a game like that again. Thank god

I disagree with the TC about beat'em ups having to be 2 player. This is one of those annoying gaming myths. The idea that beat'em ups are only fun when there is multi-player involved. Many players prefer the challenge of playing these games solo and you only really get that sense of being a badass when it's you all alone surrounded by a bunch of enemies. You see tons of solo runs all over the internet for beat'em ups and the best, most skilled players are the ones who can run through a game solo on one credit. They're the ones you want to be teamed up with when you actually DO go for some co-op or multi-player

You guys want to see a good 3d beat'em up. Check out Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks. Great game. Also, Batman:Arkham Asylum has an EXCELLENT combat system. That game is half beat'em up and half stealth game(with some light platforming and exploration elements thrown in) and does both pretty well

Streets of Rage is overrated, but I'm sure a modern SOR game could kick ass given the right developers
well, it's just a matter of opinion in the end. I know which interview you are referring and he just said that the game was not perfect, so he didn't really say that it was a bad game. Pn03 was the only game I thought it was disappointing, especially from Mikami.

I wouldn't even have PN03 on the underrated section either. There are far better games that top it. they should have played it safe with guns instead. The erotic dance just doesn't seem to help the game in any way.

With SoRR you can replace the music with whatever you want, as long as it is in ogg.

You obviously never played Battle Circuit if you think Capcom Beat 'Em Ups were 'a little less wacky'.

Do yourself a favor and play it. Right now. It may very well be my favorite Beat 'Em Up of all time.

Also, for anyone who wants to make their own SOR... OpenBOR. Seriously, it doesn't get any better than OpenBOR.
