The game is very standard JRPG fare. The story is nothing to write home about, but the combat is solid. There is an interesting wrinkle; you gain experience immediately upon enemy death, so you'll level up during combat. When I first got it there weren't many RPGs on the PSP, so it was welcome. Now, I'd recommend you snag the two Star Ocean games first, as well as look into importing an EU copy of Breath of Fire 3.

I would agree with MrPopo go for Star Ocean and Breath of Fire 3 they are much better RPG's to play on PSP. :)

I have a strong dislike of that game. The art direction was horrible, and the colors had this chintzy, over-saturated feel. The characters and combat system are completely unimaginative, and the plot is predictable.

As the previous two posters noted, there are far stronger RPG choices for the PSP.

Shame that they all seem to be ports from other consoles. Are there any good PSP exclusive RPGs? I was unimpressed with Key of Heaven. I have high hopes for Hexyz Force. Atlus seldom disappoints.

Half Minute Hero is amazing, but it's kind of RPG-lite. Still, if you've been playing RPGs for a long time you'll love what they do with the genre. Class of Heroes is a decent Wizardry clone, but don't expect any real story.

True enough. The RPGs I'd most strongly recommend for the PSP are ports: Disgaea 1 and 2, FFT: War of the Lions, Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth, and perhaps Persona.

But even if we took the ports off the table, I'd still recommend Crimson Gem Saga, Jeanne D'Arc, and any of the Monster Hunters over Brave Story.

Heck, I'd even take Crisis Core over Brave Story.

How did I forget Crimson Gem Saga? I enjoyed that more than Brave Story. I'd recommend it, though it is kind of short. It also gets kind of grindy, as the game doesn't give you enough money to buy equipment each time you get to a new town.

i basically have most of the best rpgs for the psp ranging from valkyrie to JEAN D ARC. I just felt like trying different rpgs and i didn't know game republic made an rpg for psp, so i did pick it up in the end. I am so far enjoying the game. i just don't like the fact that most of the rpgs you guys mentioned are just the same old ports (and some enhance remakes), which I've played to death. Brave story was actually built from the ground up specifically for the psp.
