I don't think a hobby can turn into a collection or vice versa. If collecting games is your hobby, then it didn't morph into that, it started out that way. And if you're hobby is games and you happen to have loads of them, well, then you're just a guy with a shitload of games! There's really no need to define what it is unless it's that definition that you seek.
I have a horrorfilm collection, but that is simply the result of my obsession with films of that genre. So to me that's a hobby, I don't collect just for the sake of having a collection, I just want to be able to watch those movies again and again and again and again.
But just for the sake of keeping the explaining simple, you could say that you collect things even if the collecting isn't the main reason for collecting them.

But I guess that in some cases, if the particular game in question didn't age well it's more enjoyable to have them in sealed, original boxes. actually - of the 5 i own, i have one which is opened and 4 which are sealed, so its best of both worlds - i have the collectability and the fun of playing a virtual boy (there's an oxymoron right there)
I have no problems opening any of my machines - i buy some just to own them but if i wanted to play them i would play them.
I collect old electronics too - i just acquired an old Yamaha MSX-2 and a Sony version - theyre just neat to own and they work, but im never gonna play them.

Well I can't say that I don't understand you! I really wish I had a couple of boxed Sega consoles. I did have a Megadrive box when I was young and the console was still very much active on the market. But you know, cutting out Sonic and taping him to the door seemed much cooler than having a box. I also have a vage memory of the Master System box but it got sold. I was too young to really remember anything from that time but I do remember playing some of the games. I'm trying to collect all of the games we had right now but I'm focusing on the Megadrive because that was the console that I grew up with and that I really remember.

i hear ya i was lucky enough recently to get a boxed 32X, Boxed Sega Mega CD2, 2 boxed saturns, 2 boxed dreamcasts, boxed Atari Lynx, boxed 3DO, limited edition boxed game gear, boxed wonderswan and a few others all in great condition.
Just picked up an unboxed Neo Geo AES for $30USD which i think was a GREAT price..its in decent condition too. Keep your eye out for these things and u can find them very unlikely places...

Collecting older videogames is not that easy in Sweden though. Not every console even made it here. The Megadrive did stick, though, and that and the Master System is all that I care about at the moment. I did have an N64 and a Playstation later on but I wont bother collecting those just yet. The reason I even "collect" Megadrive games is that I really want to play them.
It will turn into a collection sooner or later, I'm guessing sooner...
But as of now, I just want to play some games!
I really suck at videogames but I really love playing and the 16-bit is the perfect combo between graphics and uncomplicated gameplay, in my opinion.
