The more complex something is and the smaller the parts get, the easier it is to break. Drop any modern electronic item a few feet and it will very likely not work or at least be severly hampered. Drop any 25 year old electronic item a few feet and it is still pretty likely to work fine except for dents or cracks in the case. Throw a hammer or a pair of pliers off a 5 story building and you're all but guaranteed they'll have a slight stuff and still work fine.Flake wrote:Not to bash on Sony specifically but am I the only one who remembers when video game consoles were built of hardier stuff? Compared to the 360 or PS3, a Super Nintendo is made of freakin' tungsten.
Unless the build quality of this generations revised consoles kicks up a notch, I don't see many of these machines lasting ten years much less the 20+ my NES has put in. There may come a time when this entire generation of games are practically unplayable for want of working systems.

Wait, you said you opened it up prior to it smoking? I've never looked inside a PS3 before, but I'm assuming there's heatsinks? Maybe you dropped something in there before you close it back up, with out knowing of course. And then while you were playing it started burning on the heatsink? Possible? Hey, surgeons can do it!

I don't see how that can be true. The slims definitely use less energy and run cooler than the fat versions. Here's a chart that shows the energy differences:Mod_Man_Extreme wrote: Also, the Slims actually run as hot or hotter than the other models at times and there haven't been any hardware revisions at all to the slims yet either. From everything I've seen at work and in my examinations the 40GB original PS3 runs ice cold 90% of the time and beats out the original series and slims.
Just saying, after all PS3 = HOT is basic knowledge. Nothing against you, I just hate people who get all panicky.

that came from : CNET website
The difference is like using 1 100w light bulb (slim) versus using 2 (fat)

Well duh, of course you shouldn't keep the ps3 in an enclosed space. Do you want the fans in the machine to be circulating hot air?
You wouldn't put your computer in a place like that would you? Because the ps3 is essentially the same thing.

Never, ever, vacuum your game consoles or computer internal components. Vacuums cause static buildup.RyaNtheSlayA wrote:Not panicky, but I know it was not dust considering, A) smoke does not smell like dust and B) I had just opened up and vacuumed the unit a couple days ago, and C) opening it up again after the incident the thermal paste was obviously bad as well, I will need to replace it.Mod_Man_Extreme wrote:Quit your crying and just move the PS3 to another spot.
That or you know it's just dust being blown around from the fans being so high for so long. There are quite the large amount of safety and other precaution systems in your PS3 to make it shut off before any smoke starts being made by overheating chips.

Also, yes, there has been a hardware revision.

Hm, well after spending all night tightening things up and reapplying the thermal paste, at least after about 30 minutes of play, the machine is running much more smoothly than before, I really need to find another convinient place to put it though, its kind of hard when pretty much everywhere is covered in CD's or audio equipment, I guess I'll have to make room.

My Sega Genesis is still going strong since I bought it in 1991; My PS2 barely lasted a year.

Re: No, it is not okay to put your PS3 in a small space
I've had nothing but good experience from the last generation of consoles, I found them all to be very well built and they never did output too much heat. Hell, the original Xbox was fine where I had my PS3.samsonlonghair wrote:My Sega Genesis is still going strong since I bought it in 1991; My PS2 barely lasted a year.
