Re: Beat em up games
Actually, spinning off this topic, I've always felt beat 'em ups and hack n slash were intimately related, but hack n slash seems to work better in 3D than beat 'em ups. Why do you all think that is?

Yeah, Die Hard Arcade isn't really 3D in any way that counts. Your movement is still restricted the way it would be in a 2D beat-'em-up.
A lot of people say that the Devil May Cry style of action game is a descendant of the beat-'em-up, as is the Dynasty Warriors style of hack-'n-slash. I think God Hand is the closest thing we've gotten to a 3D beat-'em-up in the traditional style that's also good, although Fighting Force wasn't so bad in its own time.
The thing is, there's not a whole lot to most beat-'em-ups. Games like Final Fight really just consist of you doing the same handful of attacks over and over for however long it takes to finish. Games like Guardian Heroes are evidence that there was a lot of untapped potential in the genre. I'd like to see it explored in new ways, not just more of the same grindathons.

I liked Beatdown: Fists of Vengance for PS2 a lot. That's a 3d beat em' up. I still have yet to play Godhand. It looks so awesome.

Re: Beat em up games
I love arcade beat 'em ups by Konami. Here are some of my favorites:
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987)
Turtles in Time
The Simpsons
X-Men Arcade - I once got to play the six player version of this game.
Arcade beat 'em ups by Capcom had a different feel to them. A little less wacky and a little more cinematic. My favorites are:
The Punisher
Knights of the Round
Captain Commando
Cadillacs and Dinosaurs (1992) - Not to be confused with the driving game on Sega CD
Alien VS Predator (1994) - Not to be confused with the ten million other AVP games.
From 1987ish to 1991ish was the golden era of beat 'em ups in the arcade, but some of the best came out later in the nineties including EA's Battletoads Arcade.

Maybe Sega did the wise thing by canning Streets of Rage 4?
What about the Slashout/Spikeout games?

Re: Beat em up games
I have to disagree with a lot of you. God Hand was crap and is absolutely NOT how to do a 3d beat'em up right. Horrible tank controls with the absolutely retarded right analog stick dodge system, cheap, random bullshit and a completely retarded game difficulty generator that kept changing the game's difficulty based off of a performance evaluation system that wasn't even remotely accurate. There was an interview not long ago where Mikami himself said that God Hand wasn't good and that he'll never make a game like that again. Thank god
I disagree with the TC about beat'em ups having to be 2 player. This is one of those annoying gaming myths. The idea that beat'em ups are only fun when there is multi-player involved. Many players prefer the challenge of playing these games solo and you only really get that sense of being a badass when it's you all alone surrounded by a bunch of enemies. You see tons of solo runs all over the internet for beat'em ups and the best, most skilled players are the ones who can run through a game solo on one credit. They're the ones you want to be teamed up with when you actually DO go for some co-op or multi-player
You guys want to see a good 3d beat'em up. Check out Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks. Great game. Also, Batman:Arkham Asylum has an EXCELLENT combat system. That game is half beat'em up and half stealth game(with some light platforming and exploration elements thrown in) and does both pretty well
Streets of Rage is overrated, but I'm sure a modern SOR game could kick ass given the right developers
