No, it is not okay to put your PS3 in a small space

Post by RyaNtheSlayA »

I kept mine in my cabinet as I usually do, but this time, something scared me. The fans usually rev up every 15 minutes to 100% then go back down the about 60-75% and it doesn't seem to be a problem, however, tonight, while I was playing, the fan kicked on, and well, lets just say 5 seconds later I noticed a small amount of SMOKE rise from the opening in my cabinet. Now, the PS3 is fine as far as I can tell (long term it wont last as long I gather), but still, this has driven me to the point where I'm going to go and upgrade to the newer slim which is even cooler than the first iteration of slims which is way cooler than the 40gb model which is, well cooler than my roasty 60gb model. So if any of you are up for trade, I thought I'd let you know, but also as a fair warning to those that keep their electronics in cabinets, game systems aren't standard DVD players, they get, much, much, hotter.

Quit your crying and just move the PS3 to another spot.

That or you know it's just dust being blown around from the fans being so high for so long. There are quite the large amount of safety and other precaution systems in your PS3 to make it shut off before any smoke starts being made by overheating chips.

Also, the Slims actually run as hot or hotter than the other models at times and there haven't been any hardware revisions at all to the slims yet either. From everything I've seen at work and in my examinations the 40GB original PS3 runs ice cold 90% of the time and beats out the original series and slims.

Just saying, after all PS3 = HOT is basic knowledge. Nothing against you, I just hate people who get all panicky.

I keep mine on top of the furnace with a toaster oven on top so I don't have to go in the other room to make a meatza pepperoni alfredo cobbler hot pocket while I'm playing god of war.

Not panicky, but I know it was not dust considering, A) smoke does not smell like dust and B) I had just opened up and vacuumed the unit a couple days ago, and C) opening it up again after the incident the thermal paste was obviously bad as well, I will need to replace it.

Also, yes, there has been a hardware revision.

I find it utterly amazing the system allowed itself to get hot enough to smoke, not saying I don't believe you, just saying its freaking amazing.

Well as I said in my reply to mod_man, upon furthur inspection the thermal paste was bad, and some parts were loose on the inside (I had dropped it once when we moved, but I didn't think much of it)

Ah, didn't know that you had cracked open the system or of the recent news for the revision on the 14th. Definitely replace that thermal paste though, Arctic-Silver is top of the line stuff that kills the competition.

Also, only use the system for 45 minute stretches max (let it rest and cool off completely for one to two hours) for the first week after you replace the thermal paste to let it set and mature. This prevents any overheating or drifting issues with the heatsinks.

Not to bash on Sony specifically but am I the only one who remembers when video game consoles were built of hardier stuff? Compared to the 360 or PS3, a Super Nintendo is made of freakin' tungsten.

Unless the build quality of this generations revised consoles kicks up a notch, I don't see many of these machines lasting ten years much less the 20+ my NES has put in. There may come a time when this entire generation of games are practically unplayable for want of working systems.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

not sure about the 40gb, but I had a 60gb i took good care of but it still got the ylod. I opened the thing and added the paste. It went back on, but the fan started to kick in within a min or so. I saved everything on my thumb drive, reformatted the hdd, sealed back the warranty sticker (yea i'm just that good), and traded it in the following day to get a slim. got 150 dollars out of it, which isn't too bad.
