I played I and II on the GBA and they were good IMO (or at the very least ok). They were not spectacular like Chrono Trigger or Lunar's PS version, for example. But I'm very partial to not having random encounters.

the GBA port of Lunar is so amazing. Just had to mention. Amazing.Ivo wrote:I played I and II on the GBA and they were good IMO (or at the very least ok). They were not spectacular like Chrono Trigger or Lunar's PS version, for example. But I'm very partial to not having random encounters.

Re: Breath of Fire series any good?
Considering how goddamned expensive Lunar is for the PS1, I never got a chance to experience it any other way but the Gameboy Advance.
I mean, sure, I have the Saturn version, but I have to rely on walkthroughs the whole time.

I disagree. It is a good, "standard" RPG with good production values on the GBA... But not amazing. Golden Sun for example I think is much better than the Lunar port.noiseredux wrote:the GBA port of Lunar is so amazing. Just had to mention. Mind you, I stopped playing halfway through GBA Lunar when I realized I should be playing the PS version instead (which is excellent IMO). The GBA one had random encounters whereas the PS one didn't. And of course, the production values are heavily on the PS side for technical reasons.
I'm glad you liked it though

At least there wasn't liberties taken on the script like working designs always did an you didn't have to pointlessly walk on the map screen. The PSP version has a closer script also to the JP versions.
Where's my chippy? There's my chippy.

That part about the map is absolutely true - a major "pro" of the GBA version. But IIRC the PS version, with its absence of random encounters, had a bit of overhead map wandering but without the usual suffering that is associated with it.pepharytheworm wrote: At least there wasn't liberties taken on the script like working designs always did an you didn't have to pointlessly walk on the map screen. Which made it pointless, why is there a mapscreen to find your next destination being able to walk anywhere with no battles? Its just a waste of time. Theres not any hidden discoveries or anything. The only things really that makes the PS1 game superior are the FMVs, no random encounters and the music. Battle wise and in a lot of cases the visuals are better on the GBA, big huge sprites and jessica has claws which look much cooler than a wand. Jessica is a much better battle partner in the GBA then the PS1. And don't forget price wise $5 is more bang for your buck than $50-$60. I just need to play the PSP version now to compare.Ivo wrote:That part about the map is absolutely true - a major "pro" of the GBA version. Although I personally prefer the way the GBA did this, I disagree that it is just a waste of time. It is a different experience and will probably give out a rather different sense of scale.pepharytheworm wrote: Which made it pointless, why is there a mapscreen to find your next destination being able to walk anywhere with no battles? I prefer the battles in the PS version, due to the walking and attacking thing. The GBA is simplified and it still has formations, but they don't matter nearly as much IIRC.The only things really that makes the PS1 game superior are the FMVs, no random encounters and the music. Finally, they made further tweaks to the storyline as far as I know (although personally I think that the Sega/Mega CD original has the advantage in that aspect).
Claws don't make that much sense for a healer / priest character (although Jessica isn't particularly typical), but I'll grant you they are probably cooler. There's no arguing about the price, that is for sure.and jessica has claws which look much cooler than a wand. Jessica is a much better battle partner in the GBA then the PS1.
