I'll be using it for editing video, heavy editing(going to film school.)..and gaming if I can.
Is this the computer I should get?
Re: Is this the computer I should get?
Do you need a laptop? Desktops will out-perform laptops at a cheaper price.
Also, I'm not sure what kind of brands you want to stick to (I know the Vaios are kinda expensive) but I was just looking at laptops on NewEgg for about the same price but with the newer i3, i5 and i7 CPUs.
edit: For example (I just pulled the first one I saw)...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6834157111
It has an i5 CPU, the same amount of RAM but faster DDR3 (the Vaio has DDR2), less hard drive space but a 7200RPM vs 5400rpm on the Vaio. Also has more ports on it from what I saw (again, just an example, I looked real fast). And it's $750 with a $50 mail-in rebate.
In my opinion, you could pick out some thing better for the same price or even cheaper.

Well I think I would need a laptop going to classes and such.
And i'm pretty deadset on a vaio....but i'm not completely married to them if i'm really getting a much better computer.

I edited my last post after you posted. I posted a link to an HP as an example.

If you're going to be doing video editing, a 5400rpm drive is going to be your biggest bottleneck, especially if you're doing HD editing. Like Ziggy said, definitely go with a newer processor. I'm pretty sure video encoding is directly related to CPU speed. But again, as ziggy said, if you can, get a desktop. You're going to get way more power than you are with a laptop. I am in design school for motion and 3D, and I ended up building myself a hackintosh to complement my laptop, it just wasn't cutting it anymore. Best of luck at school.

Viaos, are pretty shoddy, they look nice, but they break easily, and Sony's customer support is shit. Personally, if I were going for a high performance laptop, would go with a Lenovo ThinkPad W series, or if you are willing to sacrafice a little power but also loose some weight off the laptop, I would go for a high end ThinkPad T series. I have a T510 myself and it's absolutely amazing.
The only 2 computer companies I've been satisfied with are Apple and IBM/Lenovo though, but if you like Sony a lot then go for what you want.

Re: Is this the computer I should get?
I have an 8 core Mac Pro I bought last summer, which I use for video production, among other things. The most processor-intensive task I've found is transcoding video, especially for HD. I use Final Cut Studio, and the actual video editing part of the process doesn't seem to take nearly as much processor as transcoding. I haven't used Adobe's video suite, but I'd imagine it is similar. So I guess what I'm trying to say is that you don't need a crazy super powerful processor, but if you don't get one, just be prepared for transcoding to take a while.
You should probably find out if you'll be working with HD video or just SD. If you're using HD, you will need a lot more computer than for SD. You will also need a lot more storage space for HD. It varies by codec, but I have some raw HD video that is around 1 GB per minute, and some raw SD video that is around 250 MB per minute. A fast hard drive is a plus either way.
My advice would be to get a MacBook Pro, but I'm sure you could also find a Windows-only PC to meet your needs.

Two of my laptops and a few of my friends laptops have come from http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/
They are quite good, prices are cheap. I 100% recommend them.

Or get a Mac Book Pro and use Boot Camp to install Windows.
Re: Is this the computer I should get?
I would echo the other posts about getting a desktop, much more bang for your buck for video editing. If you are dead set on taking something to class, take the savings from getting the desktop and get a netbook or older notebook. The idea of a video editing / gaming laptop is like getting a civic for racing.
