How to capture gameplay footage from the TV

Anyone know what kind of hardware and software you need to be able to capture gameplay footage from the TV? I used to have a TV capture card, but it could only capture the TV channels and not the AV channels.

Three of these along with either DVR, PCI Capture Card, USB Capture or the ancient VCR.
This way you can still play on the big screen while recording to the laptop.

You can use a VCR if you have a way to record from the VCR itself. Just run the console through into the video in, and then run the video out to the TV. Pop in a tape, press record and start playing. Sampling from the VCR is a bit tricky but can be accomplished in a variety of ways, depending on the video inputs on your PC. It's easily doable after a trip to radioshack, if you have a VCR and tapes at home already.

Very Long cables or temporarily move gaming setup to portable TV near the computer.
I have done the long cable route to dump my vinyl LPs to MP3s.

Play the record, run to PC click capture! Hey it worked.

What kind of setup do you have now? I have my video game console going into a mini DV camera which connects to my Mac via FireWire. It captures perfectly fine in iMovie. I plan to pick up a Video Distribution Amplifier in the future to split the signal to the Mac and TV at the same time, that way I can capture footage of light gun games while enjoying them with an actual light gun.

Except your picture gets dimmer and your audio gets softer.

The proper way to record / view at the same time is to use your TV's Video Out.

Good point. But if the TV has no output and cables have good isolation from each other, dimming is negligible. The dimming affect usually occurs when two consoles are plugged into one input without a video switch to separate them. This situation is opposite, branching off to two inputs.
