I used to do factory work about ten years ago. One day I got a finger caught in a machine and I was scared to take my glove off because I was sure my finger was wrecked or severed or something. Anyhow, It ended up that it actually just pinched my finger tip . Now the nail grow from further back kind of like that. It never fixes itself.

Pic of one fingernail cut a little short.

For the OP, I lost over half of my thumb nail on a table saw in high school, lucky didn't lop off the thumb. Finally grew back after a year. Very hard to bite compared to other nails. Took 5 years to turn less brittle. Today nail is normal, with scar at the thumb below.

I had a toe nail removed because it was ingrown. That was 2 years ago. The nail is thicker than before, and is a little crooked. I expect it will take several more years to go back to normal, if it does.
