I've found that my opinion is often consulted at work when people are interested in buying a new game. I try to explain why I particularly think that Halo 3 is complete ass, but acknowledging that the plebians don't know any better and enjoy it.elvis wrote:One man's trash is another man's treasure. Just because you think it's a shitty game, doesn't mean the other person thinks it's a shitty game. Accept that personal preference exists, and you'll live a much happier life.

How do you know that the profit made by the developer of that shitty game doesn't get put in to some good R&D for their next game that is a masterpiece? Not all developers have the intent of making a bad game just for shits and giggles. Sometimes young developers put a game out to try and make back some of their money AND learn from their experience. What they did right/wrong, what worked, what needs fine tuning. They use that experience to make a better game next time. It's not like every game out there is going to be a best seller, but every developer learned something by putting it out there.

I do this at the grocery store. The other day I saw a guy checking out a can of beans. I told him "don't buy that, buy the fresh beans down there." He just put the can in his cart and left. Some people just don't know what's good and what isn't.

You can't convince people to not buy something. Saying "Don't buy that, it is a bad game" is just being a dick. Also, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Funt

Working at a game store has taught me that there is a huge market for shit games, the only problem with that is the more people keep buying shit games, the lower the standards are for developers to make good games. So if the top selling games for next year are Carnival Games 3 and the latest Family Game Night, you better believe there will be tons more made, and many sequels after that(not like there aren't already), this is why Call of Duty and Guitar Hero are selling so much.
Now, the approach that I take is basically, don't sell people games they won't have fun playing, as bad as some of the games might be, for John Funt and his kids, they will enjoy the newest Carnival Games, so I wouldn't discourage them from playing or buying the game, however, if someone wanted Two Worlds, I discourage the purchase immediately and suggest Oblivion, because no one can have fun playing Two Worlds. At the end of the day though, I'm only contributing to the increased sales of shit games.

I LOVED two worlds. The only problem was I kept dying, and had to go back and try and kill the stupid end boss.

Kind of arrogant to label those with different tastes in video games as stupid.
Put me in the category of "give advice when asked". Don't be comic book guy. It's one thing if you see a Grandmother, or hot Mom for that matter, walking around picking up the cases, reading the game descriptions while looking completely confused. Those people, I'll ask if they need a suggestion. But that's just me.
If you want to spend your free time patrolling game stores, I say go for it. You'd probably piss off a lot of people, but might also help a few.

It would be fine to say this to parents obviously buying games for their kids around Christmas. I've even gotten asked before it a game was a good game, but then again I'm only 14, so people look at me like more of a gamer that know what their kids want, than you guys.

I would have thrown the can at you, nobody tells me what to eat. Well, except for the wife.Hatta wrote:I do this at the grocery store. The other day I saw a guy checking out a can of beans.
