Final Japanese Haul

Post by Betagam7 »

Got a few tips of places to go/look from people on here so just thought I'd post a pick of some of the stuff I picked up in Japan. Have fun guessing what everything is :)

Almost right except technically its SwanCrystal x 2 since those arn't the standard wonderswans but the superior final models :)

Pleasantly after spending the morning testing them they all work fine (with the exception of Lady Stalker which looks to need some head cleaning) even the 100 Yen "No refund" ones from Super Potato and the 60 Yen "junk" ones from Hard Off work fine and I wish I'd picked up more of those now. The spare Super Famicom pad I nabbed from Hard Off also worked despite its Y button seemingly not having any sensitivity when I first checked it.

As for "owned"

Yep I own them all thanks very much.

Their supplies of second hand retro games are only beaten by their supplies of second hand Manga. The Book-Off's often hold a few bargains in the SNES dept. I almost picked up a cheap SNES mouse and Mario Paint on my last night in Tokyo at one but I didn't want the hassle of it not working. Now I wish I had and many of the other 100 Yen snes games.

Best value were the Saturn games from hard-off at just 60 Yen. The "Offs" are definately the places to shop.

Deep Fear seems to be almosty entirely in english so looking forward to that one as the PAL verison sells for ludicrous money compared to the 40 pence I payed for it :)

That's not necessarily true. If you are just looking to pad your collection out with anything, they're great, but the problem is that you never know what you'll find at Hard-Off/Book-Off(when they have games, not all of them do). If you're looking for something specific (or Mega Drive/PC Engine games, as they never seem to have much of a selection of them), Hard-Off/Book-Off is definitely not the place to shop. Stick to dedicated game shops if you want something specific.

That being said, I bought hundreds of games from Hard-Offs and most of my Japanese consoles... but, that was after being in Japan for years and getting a bit lucky. You're not likely to find a good deal on an AES or PCE-Duo by visiting a Hard-Off on a holiday to Japan, but if you live in Japan you have a decent chance (NOT guaranteed!).

Where'd you pick up Radiant Silvergun, btw, and for how much? Just curious. I've seen it for under 10,000yen in Akihabara ("junk" area at Super Potato, along with PCE Dracula X for 4000yen), but not with the spine card and maybe the manual has a crease or two.

The Radiant Silvergun I got is completely mint and graded A. Picked it up in a store in Akihabara which I don't recall the name of. There were cheaper ones at other stores (not Super Potato who were charging something ludicrous like 17,000) but those were graded D and C and in the end I went for that minty fresh taste. Inspecting it I'm very pleased with the purchase.

I must have hit lucky with the Hard Off I found in Tottori, in fact I now wish I'd bought more from them particularly on the hardware side. you might be right about the lack of Megadrive games but for me as a SNES and Saturn game hunter they had what I was looking for with a huge selection of incridibly cheap games. Dissapointed that I didn't check more book-offs as I assumed they sold only books till I stumbled into one in Shibuya on my last night in town.

Envy you. There are Book-Offs in Southern CA, very cool shops.
Though not much of Retro, Japanese PS2 games are in stock.

They are still WonderSwans.

I thought you were going to get me on a technicality like on All Japan Pro Wrestling for not mentioning "FEATURING VIRTUA".

Congrats on Radiant Silvergun. In the countryside it goes for about 5500-7500 yen for a pretty good one, so let's hope you were somewhere in the vicinity IF you bought it in Tottori or any other boondock place you visited.

The "OFF" stores are great, but as mentioned before, it really depends on which one you go to. I guess it doesn't matter now, since you left or are leaving Japan. One of Hard Off's biggest competitors is "SECOND STREET", and they also have great finds. Next time you go to Japan, be sure to visit the mother of all retro game shops, Mandai Shoten or the Kanteidan stores.

Did you get a Super Potato point card just for shits and giggles? A great souvenir!
Super Potato's prices are high, but they ARE generous with points.
