Breath of Fire series any good?
Re: Breath of Fire series any good?
I'd agree with everyone that II and III are tops, but I really enjoyed IV as well. Skip everything after four.

I actually really enjoyed Dragon Quarter. I thought the battle system was great, and the story was more original than most things you see in RPG's now.
Re: Breath of Fire series any good?
Breath of Fire III holds a VERY special place in my heart. It may be a little short, but it is a phenomenal game. IV is also very good (though maybe not quite as much so as III). Dragon quarter isn't necessarily bad, it is just very different than the rest of the series, so don't go into it expecting that. The first 2 can hol dthere own as well, but I think BoF3 is something that everybody who even mildly enjoys RPGs needs to play.

I've been thinking of selling my SNES BoF 1. It is basically mint down to the plastic baggie and the receipt from when I purchased it back in the day. Just throwing that out there in case anyone might be interested.

BoF 1 is decent. If you have a good memory you can snag some very nice equipment that will last you the rest of the game at certain points in the story when you get a new ability. They try some interesting things, such as Karn's fusion system, but as a result it makes several of your party members completely useless.
BoF 2 is awesome, cause it has the greatest incarnation of Nina.

For every cart I own that most people don't know about, there's probably three carts that you'd be shocked that I still don't own.pepharytheworm wrote:You don't have them? Tsk Tsk your suppose to be the resident GB/GBA guy.noiseredux wrote:I've been keeping my eyes pealed for the GBA releases...

Re: Breath of Fire series any good?
I truly enjoyed both 1 and 2
never really got into nr. 3, but from what I hear it's the peak of the series
nr. 4 and 5 seemed... meh to me
nr. 2 has the best story-line (IMO) it may be rehash, but I don't play that many JRPG's
it has some interesting concepts as well (build your "own" town)
I don't think there's any need to play them in "order", since they seem to restart the series every time(?)
but I'd still go with 1 through 5 if I was to restart the series as a whole (I just seem to get stuck in nr. 1 at a certain point of the game)
they're not Chrono Trigger or FFVI, but they're definitively worth a go

I actually had to decide between the Wild Arms series and this. Right now, I have wild arms 1-5 and I'm liking it so far. I am still curious about breath of fire though. I did try 5 if i remember correctly and i thought it was so so. I had one but it was stolen before I had the chance to even try.

Re: Breath of Fire series any good?
this threads pretty great because im iin the process of getting these all.. well the console versions at least. I played III when it came out (own it) but never really beat it. I stoped playing it for a while then when i came back i had no idea what i was doing. I just picked up I and it seems neat, i gotta play throug it. Im in the process of keeping an eye out for II and IV. I actually have the strat guide for I and III so im kinda wanting to snag the guide for IV as well for the hella it (not II though.. these old guides are pretty worthless it seems)
It sounds like people seem to think II is the best of the series? What makes nina so different? she always seems to be just a chick with wings in all of them from what ive seen
