Strange Panzer Dragoon Saga bug

this happened to me the first time I played it but I wasn't posting here at the time so I never bothered to post it.

I was given a copy of this game by my girlfriend(who is very good at knowing what i like, apparently). i put it in, threw the game on, everything was all good...but when the cut scenes started, the text at the bottom displayed strange characters instead of E's, A's, and some I's. it was really weird, and I thought maybe she had bought a rather convincing bootleg of some kind. I simply erased the file and started again. Hasn't happened since. anyone else have this happen to their copies of PDS?

My original PDS game saves got corrupted over the years. The file names as listed in memory contained the same goofed up looking characters.
