What is "game doctored"?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

What is "game doctored"?

Post by joehero »

Im looking at buying a psx game off ebay. The buy it now cost is quite low considering what others are selling for. The seller has mentioned that the discs were "game doctored" along time ago. Any idea what that means? Thanks.

Means they've basically been run through a buffer machine to help remove scratches by polishing the bottom of the CD...in other words, it scrapes off a layer. Doing it once or twice can get you results, but over time the disc wears away.

It also means that they felt the disc was in need of repair in the first place.

Also, games run through a game doctor (as opposed to a real polishing machine) will have telltale spiral scratches on the bottom from the process.

As long as seller wasn't too aggressive on the scrubbing, discs should be fine. The downside is you will have a buncha discs with swirl marks. Basically ¼ inch wide stripes from the polish wheel going from center to the edge of the disc. Actually there is a good layer of clear plastic on the read side before you hit the aluminum reflective pits. Some good plastic polish will get rid of most of it.

What's interesting is the number of ebay sellers who run discs through some kind of buffing or resurfacing device without letting sellers know. It's hard to know if that mint condition disc you just purchased was well taken care of or "fixed".

Eh, but you can usually tell by the condition of the book and case. A nasty case with a beat up or missing book with a minty looking disc obviously wouldn't add up.
