Does anybody just buy the game only or complete

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Like most people who posted in this thread, if the game is cartridge based, then I don't mind it cart only but if it is disc-based, then I'd want the box.The only exception for cartridges is that if it is a plastic case and for cds, I'll get it cart only if it is a game I really want.

Wow, I'm quite surprised no one seemed to say my reason for collecting games complete in box. Yes they look better on a shelf, but it's more than that. And yes, it is really helpful to have the instructions so you know what the hell you're supposed to be doing in some games. But I collect most games CIB because I enjoy looking at the box and seeing a different time based on how they market the game.
Take the back of "Xenophobe" for example. "Over 1 Mega Power!". WTF is a Mega Power?! I sure as hell don't know. That stuff is from a different time, when everyone was wrapped up in the bit wars. And it doesn't stop there, but this post does.

CIB is very important to me when I'm buying older titles. Many older games from the mid 80s to the mid 90s only contained important story elements in the instruction manual. Without the manual, you have no clue what is going on in the game.

Genesis games came with those very nice clam shells. I would like to have that, please.

It was proclaiming that the memory chip inside was 1 megabit (which is 8 times smaller than a megabyte). This was playing off the bigger is better proclamations that pervaded video game advertising in the cartridge era. More memory and higher processing bits was always presented as better, fun be damned!

One of the reasons I don't care about CIB is because many of the systems I enjoy -- certainly the ones that I enjoyed as a kid -- didn't have cases worth a damn. The cartridge came in a cardboard box. That cardboard box is hard to preserve over the ages, so very few of them exist in a condition worth displaying. And even those that are in very good condition, do not look nearly as nice as a recreated box using universal game cases.

So, for many systems, its hard to justify going CIB. Atari, Intellivision, Colecovision, SNES, Odyssey, N64... they all shipped in cardboard.

For others, the cases are so horrible I don't want to use them. I'll reserve that assessment for the Saturn.

And that leaves modern games on disc. Jewel cases snap too easily, so, screw the PSX cases -- the Dreamcast cases. Its better to house them in recreated DVD cases.

Ideally, all my cartridges would be in universal game cases, and all my discs would be in slim line DVD cases. Bliss.

I got one today in the mail that is just as quirky, and a good reminder of the polygon-pushing war that consumed the mid 90s. This is for Konami's Goal Storm for the PS1 - AKA the "best #%$@! polygon soccer game YOU'VE ever played!"

Everything you just said is exactly WHY I like getting older games CIB. The fact that many people didn't take care of those boxes or threw them out gives them more collectible value in my eyes. As a collector, getting loose cartridges is just too easy and thus not worth it in my eyes. Anything really worth doing takes some effort and it's rewarding when I can find an old game I want CIB

Oh, I understand. But my Pocky & Rocky cartridge is just as good in a Universal Game Case as one that comes in a pristine cardboard box. And, to my mind, it looks a bit better. The game gets love, which is what matters most to me.

Does anybody just buy the game only or complete

Post by mas »

I just got a quick question, does anyone ever just buy the game only or does the game have to be complete? I know the cartridge games i just buy the game but any disc game i have to be anal and have it complete or i wont buy it no matter how rare the game is. I just passed up on fatal fury for dreamcast for 12.00 because it wasn't complete. Is there anyone else like me out there and why do people throw away the cases anyways?

This thread has been done before. THe rule is CD/Tiny Cartridge (like DS or even N-gage) games Complete, Cartridge games can be loose of you are not a turbo-serious collector
