Psychologically disturbing games.

Psychologically disturbing games.

Post by J T »

I was looking through some videos online and I want to find some more creepy horror games, particularly for the PC or the Playstation 2.

I really want to get Rule of Rose.

When it comes to horror games, I prefer the creepy and unsettling over the excessively violent or "BOO!" kind of moments. Got any other recommendations?

Here's some good scenes from Haunting Ground

I also recently got Kuon, which has some nice nonsensical nightmarish moments.

Oh, and they don't necessarily have to be survival horror games, though that genre is the most obvious fit. Sometimes other game genres have an uneasy feel to them as well.

Fatal Frame 2.

The last levels of STALKER and FEAR were quite tasking, but the bulk of the games wasn't that scary.

Are the Fatal Frame games worth the cost of entry? I'm aware of them, but they are on the pricier side as far as used PS2 games go.

I played a little of the first one when it was released, but couldn't get into it because I often don't find ghosts to be scary in games or movies. If I could find an inexpensive one I would pick it up though.

What made me edgy in FF2 was the fact the enemies were always invisible unless you used the camera, and then it's quite a limited device compared to Alan Wake's flashlight for example.

I could recommend Undying too, but never managed to get far into that game for some reason.

Especially since your only "weapon" is to take their picture. :D

Exactly! Though you have to factor in the instinctive fear of ghosts. What ghosts in other games you didn't find scary J T?

What about Manhunt and the suspenseful mic interaction? Never played it (only the sequel)

And I read that Sanitarium is another good game. Disturbing? Again, cannot say.

There was also the PAL release of Forbidden Siren 2, but I guess it would be going overboard.

Eternal Darkness on the Gamecube freaked the crap out of me when I first played it. Seriously creepy all around.

EDIT!!: Can't really mention any for the PS2, I never really bought any survival horror titles for it.

I find that the most psychologically disturbing games are those where your protagonist is facing something other than physical, external harm. While I do enjoy Resident Evil, the worst that can happen to your character is that he gets his face chewed or chainsawed off. Instilling fear by showing bodily harm is a very well-beaten path, so we're culturally desensitized to it at this point.

For this reason, "Haunting Ground" is unique since it raises fear of bodily invasion. A lot of the threats to your female protagonist have an subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) undercurrent of rape.

Also, Silent Hill 2. That game is scary because of what you find out about the main character and the NPCs, so the horror is internal as opposed to external.
