any "Neotropolis-like" services for other systems?

Post by BAD PIXEL »

Neotropolis is a company that specializes in Neo Geo modding. They do incredible, clean work and have impeccable customer service. When you interact from them, it's essentially like buying from a luxury car lot from what I've heard - it's not cheap, but they go all out. You can check them out at neotropolis.net.

I'm really not here to promote them, though. Essentially, I'm looking for another company or individual that specializes in modding retro systems and has the same level of precision, dependability and customer interaction. The deal is that I have some older systems in great shape and am wary of modding myself. Sending a mint system to someone on a forum who I don't truly know, with no firm timeline as to how long the mods will take because it's not his primary job, makes me a little uncomfortable.

Specifically, I have a couple of PC Engine related mods and/or repairs (region selection, capacitor replacements, etc.) that would be great to have taken care of, but the above concerns keep me from getting them done.

I even emailed Neotropolis earlier today asking if they do PC Engine mods, but haven't heard back yet.

Any advice?

PCEngineFX.com might be a better area to check.

I recall Ryan Fitzpatrick <metalmemory@gmail.com> does repair/mod work. Check out:

Hey, thanks for the feedback on this. Yeah, Ryan's stuff is awesome. I emailed and PM'd him on here earlier this week, but haven't heard back. His work is exactly the level I'm talking about, but I think he's pretty swamped as a result. I guess if someone's good, they're going to be busy.

Just wasn't sure if someone was doing this full-time, as a business. I feel bad bugging someone who's essentially doing this in their free time.

There are also some on Neo-geo.com that bash KPJ for having such ridiculously high prices. I remember reading old forum posts there that had people ripping him a new one.

I dont personally have anything against them, I sold them my AES and carts a couple of years back. Although for alot less than I couldve gotten had I sold them myself, but I needed the money at the time.

I was about to say the same thing about Kpj and Neotropolis. His work is quality, but he charges a premium. I don't think the prices are the primary concern - those that do it for cost or close to cost are altruistic, sure, but it's not a solid business model (I imagine Kpj has a much higher turnout proportionately, but that's speculation). My consolized two-slot is from Neotropolis, so who am I to complain?

The primary concern with Kpj from the Neo-Geo forums is that, years ago, he had a lot of help to do his first consolizations from some kind folks on the forums, then turned around and made a high priced business out of it. That's where most of the bad blood derives from. And, of course, that everyone else that consolizes systems does it for much cheaper.

Good Point. Although his prices are high, the work is well done. I bought my First consolized board from him in 08 and it worked perfect.
