Question about Mickey Mouse Castle of Illusion

Post by BoringSupreez »

My copy has something I don't understand about it. It runs on my Genesis, but it claims to be a Mega Drive game on the cartridge. I believe that's what it was called in Europe, so if it was PAL, why would it run on my sysytem? Did some American Genesis games call themselves Mega Drive games for some reason?

Not all Genesis/Mega Drive games are region-locked. I think most games are totally region free, and some are even programmed as such (Streets of Rage loads as Bare Knuckle when in a Japanese system). So you probably do have a PAL cartridge, maybe you can compare the gameplay to videos of known NTSC version to see if you can notice a difference with the PAL game, or maybe you can find some markings on the cart itself that'll help you figure it out.
My Want List!

Consoles: Sega Master System, NES Toploader, Genesis/32X, Sega CDX, SNES, 3DO FZ-1, Sega Saturn, Nintendo 64, Sega Dreamcast, Sony PS2, Nintendo Gamecube, Xbox Halo Edition, Wii, PS3
Handhelds: Atari Lynx, Sega Nomad, Neo Geo Pocket Color, GBC (Atomic Purple, Pokemon Edition), GBA (Pink OG, Silver SP, Spongebob SP+), DS (Phat, iXL), 3DS, PSP (1000, Go)

If it's PAL, maybe that's why it's such a slow game.

Mine is like that, too. In fact, the case and manual both say Genesis while the cart says Mega Drive. It was bought new by my sister's friend and later ended up in my hands. I know exactly where it came from.

Strange.

Wrong. The game actually runs at the speed of the console it's being played on (50Hz on Pal, 60Hz on NTSC) irrespective of where the cart originated from. Which is why modding a Pal Mega Drive to play at 60Hz is brilliant. It's just a slow game.
Mostly harmless

I've had a Genesis version of Batman Forever and Predator 2 for as long as I can remember (living in the UK).

It never bothered me as a young lad because the games still worked. It's only recently that it struck me that they're from the US. Still work though.

By taking a look at dumped roms you can tell whether the game had different carts for different regions. Parenthesised W or UE should mean the cart works on both NTSC and PAL machines.
