er, have u heard about the 'war on terror'? That was the reason we followed Bush into a unwinnable war without a good legal mandate.
I don't think a great many muslim extremists are 'invading' the UK, they seem pretty well occupied in afganistan, pakistan and iraq.
One thing labour did give us was robust anti 'terror' legislation, which borders on infringement of human rights. Tories are going to limit the number of non-EU immigrants, even though the Liberals don't like it. I don't see that there's much more that can be done on domestic homeland security. Let's invade iran.

I wasn't specifically talking about the war on terror. I was talking about stuff like this:bobbynewmarkiii wrote:^^^

Thats what you get for reading the Mail.
Re: So, Britain...new prime minister, eh?
Damnit Bobby you beat me to it!
The Mail just LOVES these kind of stories, they love spreading these sensationalist stories about how 'they' are going to change the name of christmas so as not to offend muslims and other such utter nonsense. The mail's absolute favourite phrase in the world is "political correctness gone mad!". It's all bollocks really.

So, then, what about the imposing of aspects of sharia law in the UK? It seems strange to allow people into a nation that then adhere to a different justice system, even though they're citizens of that nation.

My View of the island nation and its politics
Margaret thatcher - she completely destroyed all primary and secondary industries in the country leaving it with tertiary industries for the most part i.e Financial services. We fought a war in the falklands which could have been avoided - it would have been cheaper to give every islander 1M pounds to move than fight that war or we could have sent the submarines months before to sink the ships that took the argentine soldiers to the island in the first place.
Still it sent her approval ratings from 30% to 50% odd percent for the election that she immediately called after the war. We then had the stock market crash of 87 under her leadership, gulf war 1 and the poll tax.
John Major then took over, yes the man who was a clown before he was a politician (we should have known better) - he joined the ERM which was a harmonisation of the currency with the rest of Europe which was a complete disaster after we had a run on British currency which led to another recession
His second master stroke was to remove free post school education, make students take out loans and then hopefully charge them higher tax when they graduate.
He did not last long but probably too long.
So the country switched to labour
Tony Blair and Gordon Brown allowed financial services to lend money and make pretend money which people then used to buy things they couldnt afford, All the while the uneducated and lazy stayed at home claiming benefits. Life was good but completely false as they were living on borrowed time and more importantly borrowed money.
We also got involved in the treasure hunt for weapons of mass destruction, politicians scamming their expenses, went to afghanistan to fight against people who havent lost a war since the days of Ghengis Khan but no matter
Tony then disappeared left Gordon carrying the can - who to be honest is unlikeable to start with so it was all downhill from there for labour.
Now there is a coalition government with two parties who hated each other but have buried the hatchet for the sake of the country. (read desperation for power)
Labour goes into opposition again waiting for the coalition to balls up and get back into power.
In summary the last thirty years has seen a decline in the standards of a once great country and will probably continue to decline until something radical happens - which seems very unlikely as it stands which is why I left for pastures new five years ago.

Re: So, Britain...new prime minister, eh?
I basically agree with all of this. The EU treaty thing made me really angry, since we were promised that referendum, and as you say, they realised it would lose and so just scrapped the referendum. I feel sorry for the Irish as well. They said 'no', and were basically forced into another referendum until they said 'yes'.bacteria wrote:Labour destroyed the country - sent us to war for no legitimate reason, made out pensions worthless, gave power to the banks and caused us to go into trillions of pounds in debt. No other government has fucked up our country like they did in the last years. They also forced us into Europe with a referendum they promised and didn't give us because they knew we would vote against it.
The Liberals want to make all our illegal immigrants legal and open our borders entirely to anyone, make our small country even less able to house people and break our NHS system. Great.
Conservatives - they were unpopular, yes, but at least they didn't bring the country to its knees, and you mention Thatcher - hey, she got the Argentinians to get the fuck out of the Falklands when they invaded our land - I doubt any modern government would have the balls to do that. Like her or hate her, she had balls; not a faceless waste of space we get these days.
And call me a Daily Mail reader, but stories like the ones mentioned earlier in the thread do concern me. I hate the way that the British bend over backwards to accomodate foreigners that don't like this country and are only here for the benefits system. It's bullshit.
The day Sharia Law is implemented is that day that Britain is officially dead. You can't have different judicial systems for different sets of people. One law of the land for all is the only way
This makes me so angry. If there's one thing that Labour fucked up the most, it was the creation of a system of total dependancy on the state. There are so many lowlifes now that rely on the state to provide for them in every single way, all while they do nothing but watch daytime tv, spend tax-payers money and churn out even more children.countcowden wrote:

I'm a student right now, but if I was paying taxes it would make me sick with rage at the thought of my earnings going to these sub-human scum (harsh, but that's seriously how bad it is)
Re: So, Britain...new prime minister, eh?
I really think it's interesting how you guys on the other side of the pond think of Margaret Thatcher. In the US, it tends to follow party lines: if you're Republican, Thatcher was a great ally to Ronald Reagan, and while American and British interests might not have always coincided, the British were valuable partners against the Soviet Union. The Democrats don't seem to mention Thatcher much, which leads me to think they don't think much of her. But I see the Brits, or at least the group on this site, don't like her.
Thanks for all the incites you've given us concerning your political system.
