There were some angry letters in magazines back in the day, complaining that Doom 2 didn't offer much new content. I found those pitiful

Doomsday Engine HQ
the only Doom engine you'll need:
http://dengine.net/
and short clip of it in action
it adds 3D models, new lightning effects view up/down, etc., etc., etc.
it's not the *only* Doom engine out there, but IMO the best

I always thought adding 3D models and freelook in Doom made it pointless. The limitations of the original engine were its strengths.

Any anti-Doom or Doom 2 talk is straight out blasphemy and will not stand! I'm afraid it must be you that is godawful at playing, because it sure as hell is not a godawful game! Learn to play better! It just never really occurred to me just how godawful Doom 2 is compared to the original until i played them both in a row.
/mandatory defense gripe
Anyway, the increased enemy strength is generally offset by your increased firepower (e.g. the SSG). Yes, the game is harder than the first, but that is part of what made it such a strong sequel - otherwise it would have probably felt even more similar to Doom 1. Plus, like in the first, difficulty is scalable - you can always try to lower the difficulty if you need to. Besides, both games were designed to butt-hurt you unlike most modern FPSs which hold your hand constantly (regenerative health!). So, suck it up and learn how to funnel your rage at the game into death for the demons!

Actually, it's to get you to start making them pick fights with each other. One of the biggest tactics to get through Doom 2 was to get one enemy to shoot another and see if you could turn it into a free-for-all where they all kill each other.arion wrote:Also to further illustrate my dislike of Doom 2 one level has you fighting a Cyberdemon and a Spider Mastermind at the same time. Now in the original both of these were end of chapter bosses. And this is in the beginning of the level and not really that far into the game.
Thats just a really cheap way of increasing difficulty.

Re: So i've been playing Doom again
I actually fired up Doom this weekend for a bit. It never gets old. I tried out the Doomsday engine, pretty but not the same. Chocolate doom was exactly the same, but there's no reason to stick with such a low resolution these days. Zdoom compiles on linux now, but it's just not as smooth as it should be. I think I like PrBoom the best. It doesn't add much to the graphics except increased resolution, and it plays smooth and fast. What a classic.

I absolutely LOVE Doomsday. I never used any updated models or anything, but it lets me use the mouse (I have Doom Collector's Edition).
