So i've been playing Doom again

Post by arion »

And after going through both Doom and Doom 2 i'll probably play the first one again someday but i will never play Doom 2 again !!

Because of this damned thing

And pretty much any monster that was added in the sequel are just annoying
but this one trumps them all. Followed closely by the Machine Gun Dude that for
some reason has an automatic shotgun and is able to cause massive damage
from very far away. And they usually are somewhere far away pecking at your health
where you cant see them.

Then there are the Skeletons with Rocketlaunchers that punch the crap out of you
if you get too close. And that thing that somehow puts you on fire and ressurects enemies.

Not forgetting fat blob thing that shoots big fireballs.

Yeah i really hate the monster design for Doom 2. And the reason i am ranting about this is because the original Doom which has none of these things is much more fun to play. It just never really occurred to me just how godawful Doom 2 is compared to the original until i played them both in a row.

You dislike Pain Elementals?

I actually didn't mind the enemy designs in Doom 2...for the most part. I hated the final boss design because it took forever for me to figure out what I was supposed to do. And while it's been years since I beat it, I enjoyed it a lot, even with the cheap enemies and level designs at times.

I remember when I was a kid, Doom 2 first came out and I went up against the CyberDemon. I had nightmares of his loud footsteps coming towards me and then his scream and he rounded the corner...

Meh, I love Doom II just as much as I love Doom. Pain Elementals really aren't that hard, and I actually like Chain Gun Guys. They do shitloads of damage, but they're usually in a place where you know where the shots are coming from and you can hide from them. Revenants I've never really minded, and Archviles, while annoying as fuck, I don't feel are necessarily poorly designed. They're suppose to be hard and make your life hell if you don't kill them, and they do just that.

Also, Doom II has the SSG, so that alone gives it something over Doom.

Yeah i dislike the Pain Elementals they spawn lost souls and when killed two lost souls get spawned from the explosion. By itself it's not a big deal but you rarely face them alone and while fighting a group of enemies you have to get them down fast else you'll get swamped by lost souls.

Also to further illustrate my dislike of Doom 2 one level has you fighting a Cyberdemon and a Spider Mastermind at the same time. Now in the original both of these were end of chapter bosses. And this is in the beginning of the level and not really that far into the game.

Thats just a really cheap way of increasing difficulty.

I never really got into Doom past the first level which was fun to run through in 11 seconds or whatever. I just get annoyed with the mindless maze wandering which in combination with the first person perspective makes me claustrophobic.

You think Doom 2 is cheap? You haven't played Doom 64 yet! The traps in that game are downright DASTARDLY.

Also, imho- Doom and Doom 2 are more fun if played on a GBA. Respect.

Final Doom is like a compliation of levels, if I recall right.

I sold mine.
