a bit scary that nobody's mentioned:

The Last Ninja 1-3

in no particular order, they all kick ass!

and Saboteur 1+2

(both for Commodore 64, coincidentally =)

If this topic was called most badass ninja game, I'd give it to Shinobi on the PS2. Seriously, no other ninja in any game looks as cool as Hotsuma after a full tate on a boss with his red scarf waving in the wind. He'd kick Ryu Hyabusa's ass

The Tenchu series is not only one of my favorite ninja games, but my favorite stealth series period and Tenchu 2 was the best one. It had a good story and was really strict of the rank requirements. You had to be PERFECT to get Grand Master rank on some stages and Tenchu 2 introduced the awesome blow guns as well as the ability to drag bodies(which was not possible in Wrath of Heaven)

For all the love it gets, I don't like Strider. Strider 2 on the Playstation on the other hand is frikking awesome! Strider could also kick Ryu Hyabusa's ass(not hating on Ryu, I'm just saying)

As for 8-bit era games, Ninja Gaiden II hands down

16-bit era games, the crown goes to Shinobi III on the Genesis

somehow that doesn't sound right to me :?
It is true. I don't remember if the intro had Michelangelo's weapons, but I'm pretty sure they showed up during the show itself.

When you think about it, Tenchu is the most "accurate" Ninja series out there. The Shinobi and Ninja Gaiden games utterly neglect the stealth factor.

I tried to like Tenchu, but the controls never did it for me.

It's also worth mentioning that the Tenchu series were pretty good at creating an atmosphere and the original Tenchu on the PS1 had a great soundtrack that helped with that

What I love about Tenchu is you are a predator. A lot of stealth games have you sneaking about because you'll get your ass handed to you or get an instant game over if you're spotted. A lof of stealth games make you feel weak. Tenchu had gloriously brutal stealth kills and you HAD to kill your enemies to get the best ranking. So rather than feeling like weak prey, sneaking past all your enemies to avoid getting a game over, Tenchu made you feel like a predator, stalking your enemies and executing them silently and efficiently

This is something that Batman:Arkham Asylum does well too. The fear that your enemies have for Batman is palpable and escalates with each enemy you stealthily take out. Once you get down to just one enemy left in the area, you will see that he is a bundle of nerves and fear, randomly firing his gun at random sounds and constantly looking behind him

Both of these games have this cool sort of primal quality to them. Giving that sense of predator versus prey that a lot of other stealth titles don't have

Definitely Tenchu 2, solely for the reason that it has a map editor. It's buggy as hell, but I can't tell you how many hours I've spent making/playing custom missions.
I'm known as ZebetiteGlitch or Zeza Von Thantos on other platforms.
