Welcome! Always great to have new members with their experiences and ideas. No worries if new or seasoned, everyone can contribute. You could modify your signature link if you want to, and show what systems you own. Also if you have not tried that blue links bar above in particular "Topics" and "Guides", Racketboy has provided a wealth of information on various systems.
Simple mod to perform. Extending the wire won't affect sound quality as long as you have a good solder connection. More at issue is ensuring clearance for the socket. Rather then moving (not sure if old one is mounted on a PCB) you could just add a second plug and have both inputs working.

It's fairly simple. There's a little circuit board that the plug is attached to. Just figure out which point is ground, left, right, and solder some wire to them. Or you can trace them back onto the main board on solder there, if you do that moving the volume slider won't effect the sound.

Re: need a bit of help with megadrive mod
If I were making the mod, I'd leave the front jack where it is and solder wires to one you add on the rear. This way you can still use the front if you do happen to want to use headphones later and so you don't leave a hole in front. You should be able to find a threaded one with a nut so you can just drill a hole in the case and secure it and just run the wires to the board.
