Yes - It's very much in the action rpg genre... I don't usually like traditional rpg's - I can count those that I've finished on one hand. Demon's souls is more like a hardcore version of the Ninja Gaiden xbox game.

I like the story, but it's very slow moving - I'm having to force myself not to find out too much m=by going on gamefaqs or whatever. And yes, the atmosphere is awesome. I've grown quite thick skinned to shocks and frights in videogames (bioshock only got me once or twice), but Demon's souls makes the hairs on my arms stand up almost every time I play it - it's like Doom was back in the day.

And the multiplayer... I love it - got punk'd by some asshole black phantom the other day for the first time - thought I might of been able to get him for a while but he was obviously a higher level than me and had a fuckoff huge shield. I havn't invited anyone into my game yet, I'd quite like to beat the game on my own first. Outside of the invading games direct multiplayer, the hints and bloodstains are cool for playing cautiously - check out what other players died of, and what they say - were they just some idiot who fell off a cliff, or couldn't cope with that skeleton, or might you be able to learn something from their death?

One thing though - you can't just sit down for a quick blast with this game - I usually have to find a clear morning or afternoon at the weekend, hence rather slow progress, and why I'm not playing it now. I have my to do list though - there's apparently a good soul farming spot on 4-2, so I've got to get through 4-1 first - perhaps I'll take a day off work!

I just ordered this when Gamestop dropped the price to $33. I can't wait for it to get here to see how punishing this game is. You all make it sound brutal.

Me and a friend just picked this up again now that we're done school. We're currently playing it parallel with eachother on two different ps3 consoles. I have lost so many souls, and died so many times, wasting hours of work, and I haven't gotten genuinely angry at the game yet which is an impressive feat. I think this game has one of the best atmosphere's in any game I've played. We're currently stuck at the stupid flamelurker because all I have is a winged spear +5 and it does shit all to him and all of the lava bugs in the level.

Yeah that was the first time I actually had some trouble. Those lava bugs just take so long and no matter how many times I tried I just could not get down the shortcut mine shaft without dying.

If you have sticky white stuff or magic the bugs die much faster. And the shortcut tunnel is just a lot of trial and error. Once you figure out the path it's pretty easy.

I've got some sticky white stuff but not used it - is it a consumable - like the turpentine, or does it permanently improve the weapon?

Consumable. It's the equivalent of the spell "Enchant weapon".

Me and my friend played the damn thing from 4pm yesterday to 9 am this morning. I don't think I've laughed so hard or been so terrified in a long time. I'm lvl 64 now and I'm going to attempt to fight whatever is at the tower of latria. We only stopped playing because we were on that level for about an hour with some other guy we summoned, and we were ready to move on to the next floor when I stupidly ran back to gofind the other guy, and fell down a hole in the floor and died.
