so the basis of my problem is this...
i copied virtua fighter 2 from the retail that came with my saturn. this backup works. now, for whatever reason, if i try to boot the system twice in a row, the chip won't work. but if i leave it off for awhile, it works every time.
not that big a deal, BUT, any other backup i've tried burning myself (saga, zwei, shining force) DOES NOT WORK no matter how many times i try.
ok i thought, maybe i'm just burning it wrong. 5 programs and 10 blank cd's later, i'm at a loss.
OK i think, maybe the images are just... bad? bad rips or whatnot. so i get cassini and SSF. the image for Zwei loads fine. everything else i get an error on.
now, on a whim, i try putting in the burned cd's that didnt work in the saturn (azel). AND THEY BOOT IN SSF
so now i've got backups that boot in SSF but NOT on my modded saturn
am i losing my mind?
maybe a strange saturn backup problem

ssf isn't as picky as the Saturn is with the image it reads.
As for the not turning the system off and not getting a second game to work. I'm assuming you mean you swap the disk out and reset the console. I've had a couple Saturn's do that as well with me. I think it just might be normal on certain models.
As for burning... I personally haven't had any problems with burning games accept for "Shining Force CD" for the SegaCD. It was the first game I ever burned and was the only one to ever give me a hassle (went through 10 CD-Rs on that game). In the process of burning the game though I learned everything there was about .CUE sheets and how to write my own and what all the little sector size numbers and other nonsense mean.
Keep in mind I learned all this before sega-cue-maker was around. So it was either follow the sheet that came with the game (which was more often not with the game), or write your own. I stopped even bothering with the .cue sheets that DID come with games as I didn't even trust them anymore as the people tend to write their's completely different then how I write mine.
Nor do I trust software to do anything I can do myself (it takes me longer to solve an equation with a calculator as I have to run it through 5 times before I even trust the thing). SO, really, I suggest you go out and read some tutorials on .cue sheets, and try making your own. They aren't that hard and really... take it from me... since I started writing them, I've NEVER had a bad burn (excluding 2 or 3 bad downloads, but I caught those before even attempting to burn them... the glory of .sfv... oh and Mozgus found a bad copy of MegaManX4 on my FTPsite, but I never even burned that game before)

so it turns out the problem was the media
the one difference i totally didnt think about. was that the VF2 was on a TDK disc, and i bought blank fujifilm last night. but i had 1 TDK disc left.
i just used daemontools + clone cd, burned a game. and it booted up flawless.
now i'm off to buy more blank cd's i guess.
