Picture sliding of CRT screen.

Post by EveningEmma »

I have a Sony Trinitron which I love to bits and works perfectly with all my consoles except it appears that the picture is sliding off the screen. What I mean is that slowly, over time, the picture has moved to the left, so the left side is cut off and there's a black line down the right side of the screen.

So, my question is, is there any way to fix this? Or should I just cut my losses and use my other, crappier, 60Hz hating CRT where I can at least see the whole picture?

If nothing in the setup screen menu you may have to pop the back off.
Horizontal and Vertical potentiometer adjustments are there, careful high voltage.

Other option is another CRT, pretty cheap to get second hand.
Check my LCD vs CRT signature link.

Sounds like the horizontal adjustment has a bad connection and as the TV heats up and things expand, it makes a little bit better or worse connection so the value changes and the picture moves a bit. If you can see a recessed knob for horizontal position on the back of the TV, tweaking that back and forth a few times to clear a little corrosion, then setting it back where the picture is centered might do the trick. If you don't see any recessed knobs because the TV is too new, it would require opening the TV which can be VERY dangerous due to the charge that the flyback transformer holds for weeks or more even after being unplugged.

Hmm, ok, thanks guys.
I don't think I'd quite dare to open up the back of the telly if there's a potential of a bad shock.
I'll probably just live with the crappier telly for a while until we can afford to get a nice HD telly for the Xbox. :)

Not a risk if careful. Just stay away from the back of the tube. As Hobie pointed out you might be able to access through recessed holes in the back. "Plastic screwdriver" TV tuner keeps the shock risk out.

Was there anything in the screen setup menu?

No, there's nothing there, I've looked through it a few times and found nothing. There's no dial on the back either.

Settings like that are found in the Service Menu, you need to find out how to get there for your model of TV.

You can always take the back off. There is high voltage around the picture tube. Really not a risk if you are careful and avoid that area. The horizontal and vertical potentiometers are normally situated together on the circuit board in the back.

If the image 'slides' over time, I doubt changing anything in a menu will help. The issue is pretty sure to be some physical part changing value due to heat expansion. Could be a horizontal adjustment dial with a little corrosion inside or it could be a capacitor that's failing and starts going bonkers as it warms up.

Well, I think my boyfriend's quite keen to get his hands dirty and take the back off, so I think we'll try and fix it over the summer, when we've moved out of university accomodation and have some proper tools to use.
