How long will cd's last?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

I wish someone told me to get only phthalocyanine-dyed CD-R's. I have hundreds of discs that are unreadable which I'm still painstakingly getting rid of.

Yes read side is more durable, but always place back in the case to avoid headaches.

Just don't put them down at all if they're not in the case, system, or at the very least on something that only touches the clear center section. Otherwise you're just waiting for an accident to happen. People wonder who so many discs look like shit, it's because people put then down on tables.

I never understood why people's discs are in such bad condition. When I traded in a bunch of PS2 and Wii games, the guy at Play N Trade was shocked that they were all mint. Like it was something he never saw before.

its not like i am out with all my cds playing football with them and using them as coasters. but when changing a disc - whether in the car, using a stereo, or with a video game - i sometimes will just place them causally label side DOWN while placing the new disc in. but what i learned today it is better to place them label side UP when to lazy to fish out the jewel case right away.

I just got the whole WCW Nitro set on dvd's,
For those who has no idea what this is
its a wrestling show that went on for 5+ years on weekly basis
thats
5+ sets of dvds, each set has 50 dvd's , and each dvd might average around 2 hours...
those have been ripped, and if you have any sense of logic I won't be done with those before at least 5 years...

I am worried that those might not last so long, not to mention you can't buy those, because they are taped off tv then put on dvd's....there was never an official release.

You have to hunt a wrestling collector who is willing to make so many copies for you and sell them on ebay or something.

Should I be worried?
Some of those dvd's say "maxwell 1-16x recordable" and others are simple plain with a mirror like surface....

Is it crazy to try and save those to a 2 terabyte hard-drive? is it even possible?

Even better is to just put the game into the new disc's case, which should be open from taking the new disc out, and then close the case. It's 0.5 seconds more work than setting the disc on the floor or wherever. You can then sort your discs into the right cases later.

Should last fine, but a backup is a good idea. You can use DVD Decrypter.

I backup the family JPGs once a year to CDR's. I maintain original on the hard drive and duplicates sent off every Christmas.
Enough backups all around.
