Weird and not practical yet, but... N64 repro carts?

Post by REPO Man »

On a scale of 1 to 10, how possible? Difficult?

And so far, all I can think of is:

* Sin & Punishment in English
* Custom levels in Goldeneye

Nothing else, yet.

I always thought that N64 Repros were impossible because the N64 reads the game data similar to a CD? I remember reading that somewhere but I honestly cannot remember where for the life of me...
Collects promo gaming stuff, certain import games, hockey memorabilia, and other oddball things. (sig and avy under construction)

well, the N64 used "boot codes" as the main way of protecting against bootlegs, afaik.
there might be issues with that.

also, the only english patch i know of for S&P uses the hires texture thing only avaliable in emulators, so who knows if the real system could handle it.

Just get a flash cart instead.

Unfortunately, that's the case. The actual ROM isn't patched, so I'm pretty sure that you couldn't use that hack to make a repro with.

We were talking about this once before, I think it was off topic though so I wont bother searching for it.

The real problem is the size of the N64 ROMs. ROM sizes range from 32Mbit to 512Mbit (which is 4MB and 64MB respectively). 32Mbit wouldn't be that big of a deal, it's a common size for a lot of SNES RPG repros. But you're out of the water with 512Mb. I haven't found anything over 32Mbit of memory chips that were readily available. I saw 64Mbit in a PDF, but never found them for sale.

512MB cartridges are very rare though. I know that Resident Evil 2 is one.

Granted, but anything over 32Mbit and you'll be up shit's creek. And that's assuming a simple mask ROM swap works.

i'm thinking you'd need to use flash instead of EPROM. maybe something similar to that snes pcb thingy with the flash chip on it that someone was selling a while back? though if you're gonna go that route you may as well just buy a copier or a flashcart
need console mods or repairs? check my thread here:
