Movie Gallery shutting down.

Apparently even after closing down multiple stores over the last few months, Movie Gallery has ended up so far in the hole they're going to close the rest of their locations. According to the Wallstreet Journal, all of the remaining 2,415 locations will be shut down in the next few months. They just closed several locations near us, I guess the rest will go soon. That only leaves two chains down here in Alabama, Blockbuster and Video Warehouse, both of which closed their Auburn locations a year ago. So unless I want to rent from a red box in front of a grocery store(I don't), looks like it's back to Netflix.

In the meantime, if you can stand owning rental copies and their horrendous boxes, cheap video games are always a good thing. I picked up a copy of Beyond Good and Evil, The Thing, and GTA: Liberty City Stories on PS2 for less than ten bucks at a closing Movie Gallery, and I'm looking forward to more cheap titles. Maybe I can nab a few real DVD cases to replace those crappy boxes.

I think they are part of Hollywood Video-Game Crazy. The last Game Crazy in my U.S city has a building for sale sign below the store logo. No word on Canada outlets.

The Game Crazy locations in my neighborhood shuttered a while ago. Most of the video rental places are crashing. The only places left standing are a few Blockbusters and some particularly good local stores, like Scarecrow video, which I hope manages to survive all of this as it is one of the best video rental places in the world. They have crazy shit you just can't find anywhere else. Here's a picture to give you some idea of how huge they are:

My local blockbuster used to throw away tons of dvd cases. So I started going there and stocking up on them. Easy and free. Although I could never find those green ones for Xbox games. Too bad they just closed down. I really missed out. I went down to find some store closing deals and I saw empty shelves with signs saying 50% off games

Yeah, that's pretty much what I did. Movie Gallery was only offering a 30% discount, but it was on top of incredibly slashed prices, so there were games that I'd pay $10 for that were going for $5. I'll have to run by one of the remaining locations and ask about it. Thanks for the tip!

I worked at Movie Gallery for nearly 2 years before my store closed last month, and now the entire company is closing. (The company includes Hollywood Video and Game Crazy as well, so if you're looking for deals check out any of those stores.)

A sad fate for movie rentals, but it's movie gallery's time to go down, imo. They filed Chapter 11 about 5 years ago, trying to stay afloat, then last year they built a one million dollar office building downtown Chicago. I'll bet they're happy about that building now -_-. Corporate leadership is totally absent.


For anyone curious, the deals will keep getting better and better until the final closing day. As an employee we were never sure what was going to happen - I think games topped out at 80% off and on the last day, we were selling movies 12 for $1.

Also, my store sold all of our empty cases for 10 for $1, so ask an employee if they have any sitting around if you want some. Odds are they have stacks of them in the back.
