Okay, I've been having a really weird problem with my PS2: it absolutely refuses to read FFIX disc 4 under any circumstances, but it reads 1-3 as other games just fine. I literally have 3 copies of the disc at my house, and it won't read any of them. 2 of the discs I swear don't have a scratch, and I've cleaned them multiple times trying to get them to work. I've also recently cleaned the laser. The particularly odd thing is that the second I put the disc in, I can immediately hear the laser start trying to track the disc, whereas if I put other games in they boot up instantly.
Is it just bad luck? Or is there something specifically wrong?
PS2 won't read certain game?

Going out on a limb here, but try changing the PS1 settings on the PS2's menu.
Maybe FFIX, for whatever reason, can't boot with the disc speed or texture smoothing options to which your PS2 is set.

My PS2 was iffy wth all sorts of random games. I managed to fix it by opening it up, giving it a good ol' de-dusting, cleaining the disk drive components, wiping the lens, and readjusting the laser height.
Hopefully you won't have to do all that as it was a bit of a hassle.

mcboot doesnt work with PS1 games.vlame wrote:fucking use free mcboot and try to boot a copy
Re: PS2 won't read certain game?
vlame probably mistaken, thought it was a PS2 game. Yeah sometimes PS2 when a little off, has trouble reading CD based games. To confirm your Final fantasy disc is okay maybe test on another console. Maybe cleaning lens and polishing disc?emwearz wrote:mcboot doesnt work with PS1 games.vlame wrote:fucking use free mcboot and try to boot a copy

I have a similar problem with my FFVIII Disc 1. Just crashes at the intro movie (the one you get when you start a new game), every time.
Have you tried the disc on a real PS1? If it works on that then we can rule out dodgy disc. I know my disc is broken since it doesn't work a real PS1, both my PSOnes, both my PS2 slims and my PS2 fat.

Ugh, I'm hoping I don't have to mess with adjusting the laser but that may be a reality I have to face. I'll give that a try if nothing else works.MikeyW wrote:My PS2 was iffy wth all sorts of random games. I've already opened the PS2 and cleaned the laser, but it didn't occur to me to polish the disc. I'll give that a shot.CRTGAMER wrote:Yeah sometimes PS2 when a little off, has trouble reading CD based games. To confirm your Final fantasy disc is okay maybe test on another console. Unfortunately, I own only 1 PS2, so I'm pretty much out of luck as far as trying it on other systems.Niode wrote:Have you tried the disc on a real PS1? Thanks for the suggestions, I'm going to try a couple of these things. I'm really hoping I didn't somehow wind up with 3 truly unreadable discs, but that is a likely possibility.
Re: PS2 won't read certain game?
Judging by the lack of responses, it looks like I might be out of luck with three broken discs.
One final question though: if I can get every game to work except these discs, should I bother adjusting the PS2's laser? I know that this can fix problems, but I should think that performance would be spotty indiscriminately rather than with a certain game if that's the problem.

Granted it is 3 copies of the same game, but if everything else works, I wouldn't mess with it and risk making other stuff not work.
