Working at Game Stop
Re: Working at Game Stop
When I was at that age, I sure as hell wasn't looking for a fulfilling job experience. I was 17. I wanted money to buy crap. I mean, I agree with money not being necessarily the most important thing in a career, but as a high schooler? I would think the would easily top the list for most people.
Re: Working at Game Stop
Why would anyone buy games from a company that opens the sealed games?
1. There's a chance the game got scratched opening it and putting it away in the drawer
2. Not all stores keep a good stock of sealed games for people like me that request it
3. There's a chance a new game "mistakenly" went home with an employee in a used game insert. Accidental scratches happen here and there but its still "new" right?
So yeah the7k is right there is no reason to ever buy a new game from gamestop.

I didn't always know about Gamestop doing this, but I bought a game not long ago that clearly wasn't factory sealed and frankly, I feel like I should get a discount on something that is sold to me as new that has been opened. That is NOT new. Now I know why they ask me if I want a used copy instead. EVERYTHING they sell is used, must as well get the used price.nikon_62 wrote:Why would anyone buy games from a company that opens the sealed games?

I haven't actually bought a game from Gamestop in a while and don't think I will.

How big is it?the7k wrote:The employee discount is great
I've run into the recieving end of that sort of thing. I was buying Starcraft Battlechest one time, about a few months ago, and the guy at the counter was trying to convince me to reserve Starcraft 2. I had obviously never played Starcraft before, and he wants me to reserve the sequel! I knew what that was about, because I overheard him telling another worker that they had met all of their monthly quotas, except for reservations.the7k wrote:The bad stuff is that hours are shit, and there is a pressure to perform (get reservations, get subscriptions, etc).

Well, I looked on the website and the only jobs open are manager positions and I'm not qualified for those.
And why does GS open factory-sealed games?

I've always figured it was a store policy in an attempt to keep people from stealing games. You want to advertise what you've got, but you don't want folks walking up to the stand and swiping stuff, or have to take the time to deal with locked display cases, so instead you put up empty boxes and keep the games behind the counter.Imperfect Dark wrote:Well, I looked on the website and the only jobs open are manager positions and I'm not qualified for those.![]()

Correct. What gets me is they can send fake cases with mock artwork for upcoming games, obviously to push reservations, but they cant do the same for new games. Makes no sense to me.Ack wrote:I've always figured it was a store policy in an attempt to keep people from stealing games. Re: Working at Game Stop
Sadly, I've caught many people attempting to steal the boxes. I'll bet they get pissed when they come home. It's the main reason you often see a new game in a generic case: because the original case was stolen by some punk kid who thought he was hot shit in a campaign glass - but he's really cold diarrhea in a dixie cup!
I just wish we'd do like Toys R Us did back in the day - with sleeves containing tickets for games, and those sleeves having the box art and info printed on them. That system was great.
@BoringSupreez: 15% off at GameStop for everything but new consoles. 30% off at Barnes & Nobles for everything but movies, which are 20% off.
Another benefit I forgot to mention is health insurance. You actually get health insurance, even as a part-time employee. That's pretty keen, as all the whipper-snappers say.

Man, I totally forgot about that system. Does Toys R Us still do it? I haven't been inside one in a long time.the7k wrote:I just wish we'd do like Toys R Us did back in the day - with sleeves containing tickets for games, and those sleeves having the box art and info printed on them. Re: Working at Game Stop
Nah, they don't. They pretty much keep everything behind a huge glass case, except for stuff that is under $20, which is out on the floor.
