Just Published My First Book: Sega Master System Game Guide
Re: Just Published My First Book: Sega Master System Game Guide
I think our opinion on including pictures in the book might change after we get our copies, because we don't know what to expect.

True. Also, once I get some sample pages for the classic gaming magazine up on my site I'm sure I'll be asking for feedback to make it better.

If you have any way to add a 1 or 2 page sample either on Amazon or here, that would probably drum up interest.

OK, it's not perfect, but here is a Flickr set of the intro, a game, and a page of the index

works best in the slideshow mode. I'll try and add more once I escape the day job.

Congrats man, Ill be buying it when I get home tonight. Ill gladly support your need for beer and Master System games...
I am always remiss that there is never controls in ANY of the books like this. It is less of an issue for old console games, but modern console games and pc games need that.

Good call on Racing the Beam. I appreciate the Atari VCS a lot more after reading it.Hatta wrote:I just placed my order. I used Racing The Beam ($15) to get free shipping. I've been meaning to pick that one up for a while, so this was a good excuse. I'll be looking forward to spending some more time with my SMS.
I'll probably pick this one up when I have something else to order off of Amazon.
Systems: TI-99/4a, Commodore Vic-20, Atari 2600, NES, SMS, GB, Neo Geo MVS (Big Red 4-slot), Genesis, SNES, 3DO, PS1, N64, DC, PS2, GBA, GCN, NDSi, Wii

Since I can't buy this book from Amazon.co.uk, any chance of a PDF in exchange for a couple of bucks paypal?
Seriously though, I hope this does get published over here.

Re: Just Published My First Book: Sega Master System Game Guide
Sorry if I get a bit critical in this post, but after seeing those previews of the book, I feel kind of... underwhelmed. It just feels very bland. Yeah, it has good information, but that seems to be all it has.
For starters, as others have said, pictures are a big help. But you don't need to go overboard. Just a couple screenshots [1-3, one of the title screen, 1-2 of gameplay] would suffice; you can even print them in black and white. Just anything to spice up a page that is otherwise only text. A nice template would be great, too. Just to re-arrange the items on the page to make it more eye-catching.
Okay, now for some positive stuff. The content you have in the book sounds great; well-presented, well-researched, and very informative. All the text information a book like this should have. No complaints here. Also, I must commend you on the Table of Contents. I don't know why, but it just looks very nice.

I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with lisalover1 here, and say that those previews make me more interested in buying the book. Pictures are nice and all, but your writing style comes across as entertaining enough to keep me interested in reading the rest of the book. I'll definitely be picking this up soon!
